Clare yesterday morning, concerning
the robbery of''tliu eoiWty Ireasnury
at Harrison \Yednp3JTay night. A
Phkss reporter went'tq the county
sent at once and learni^tho fall particulars of tlie af1uii,jJa'&Jo"0'V''«.
Mr. Shaver tlie coaijty treasurer,
was busily engaged iy|us office Wed-,
nesday evening nnd Jrijvcrnl pei'sons
had been ip to see hiju. At about
ten o'eloek lie was i<jft»lone, and he
sat ai the table footing up his rolls
when'heljea'rd someone come in.—
He turned in his chai^nil faced the
muwde ofa revolver ia tlie handu of
a marked man, who (ntjered "hands
up," an.d f\pother man*hrew an overcoat oyer 'Shavu'rja ^heiid. There
were four of the" ro&bw. Thov
hand-cufied Jlie treitmit^jf, »nd drawing his wn^t^dywi^t'{»/»kiHn!vJe.i, ;?e-
curelv bound jrini^Sfeiflhalr in"
.wliil-hlw SSi-hlllSM^^hiiiH to
lhe safe. They alw'gag^ed him.—
Mr. Shaver was unkblo' td move or
speak, and thc robbers took from his
person his pocket book containing-
about §100 und his gold watch and
cliain worth as much more. With
the keys th ey easily unlocked the
vault in the safe, the outer doors
being open, nnd .sobn appropriated
all but five dollars of the currency
therein. The checks and drafts,
representing several thousand dollars
were not disturbed. They then filled the stove with wood, making a
roaring fire, one of them pulling the
overcoat off from Mr. Shaver's* head
and saying "good night," and they
quietly left the building.
The unfortunate officer thus bound
was in excruciating pain and his
mental distress added to his sufferings. He soon worked his hands
up to his knees and succeeded in
pulling the gag out of his mouth.
Then he cried loudly for help but
it was not until 2 o'clock in the morning, nearly four hours, that anyone's
attention was attracted. Oliver Gar-
son, a Frenchman living near, released Mr. Shaver and he was almost
suffocated. He walked however to
Sheriff Cramer's house and that officer removed the hand-cuffs. His
wrists and ankles were fearfully
swolen.
Mr. Shaver could not say yesterday afternoon exactly now much
money was stolen, but the amount
be estimated at between $4,000 and
§5,000. It included money received
from liquor dealers and the proceeds
of the tax sales. Our reporter could
not team that a single dispatch had
been sent anywhere to put outside
officers on guard, or that a. singleoffl-
cer had gone out from Harrison to
see if the robbers had left town in
the night.
A kit of burglar tools and a can
of powder was found near the court
house in the morning.
A reward of $500 is offered for information that will lead lo tiie arrest
and conviction of all or auy of the
robbors.
Harrison was full of swindlers
yesterday, circus day. John Rorison
had his pocket picked of a purse containing $40, and several other robberies are reported.
