term of school in Summerfield township
and is now teaching in the Bandall district, four miles north of Ciare.

Mrs. 0. L. Fletcher returned ou Tuesday morning to her home at Pine Lake,
Ingham county, having visited with her
brother, C. H. Clark, and friends in Clare

Mrs, J. G. Crow and Sirs. D. Parks, of
Trenton, Ont., mother and sister respectively of Mrs. Hiram 'DeFoe, who have
beea visiting here for the past two
weeks,returned home this morning.
Harley Howard, of Manchester, and A.
C. iGordanier have leased George Calkins'
barber shop on west 4th street. Mr. Calkins was obliged to quit the business, for
a toe at least, on account of ill health.
F- A. Wilson, of Harrison, changed
ears here Wednesday mi his way to his
farm ia Genesee county, which he has
not yisited before in more than two
years. Mr. Wilson says lt was the iirst
piece Of property he ever owned, and
purchased it with money he earned working out by tho mon tli.
Hon. Timothy E. Tarsney, familiarly
known as "The Young Lion of the Saginaws," has kindly consented to deliver a
little democratic doctrine to tho people
of Glare and yicinity at the G. A.K. hall
in this village on next Monday evening,

Enterprise, was a pleasant caller nt this
ofiice Monday. It was his first visit to
Clare, and he seemed quite favorably impressed with our pleasant little town.

Dr. and Mrs. TI. L. Ash, formerly of
Marion, were guests of their daughter,

The executive board of the Clare aud
Northern Isabella county teachers' association will hold a meetiug ac the school
house in this village tomorrow to determine the date and place of holding the
next meeting.
A three story brick hotel, a fine new
union school building, a magnificent
opera house, beside the other improvements that arc sure to follow, gives eyi-
dence that the coming summer is to be a
lively ono in Clare.
Miss Nellie Pratt and John Freeman
returned Wednesday morning to their
home in Ingham county after a few day's
visit with relatives and friends in Clare.
They were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. W.
Mclntyre, on west 1st street.
One of our Dover subscribers, who
was over two years behind on his subscription, camo in Monday and paid up
and gave us a dollar ahd a half for the
paper another year. Thero are about a
half dozen more on our Dover list that
we wish would do the samo thing.
The Olare Wooden Ware factory is
now running in full blast and is turning
out about 300 tubs and as many pails
each day. Several samples of their
wares haye been forwarded to wholesale
houses and many flattering testimonials
are being received as to the superiority
of their goods.
H. A. Sanford, of Mt. Pleasant, was in
Clare last Saturday making himself acquainted with some of the farmers of
Vernon township-. Herb, is the nominee
for prosecuting attorney of Isabella
comity upon tbo democratic ticket. Mr.
Sanford is a fine young fellow, a hustler
and an able lawyer. Ho is working hard
for the election. His oponent is E. D.
Wheat6n, formerly of this place.

Tlie democratic senatorial convention
for thi-- district, composed of the counties
of Midland, flare, Gladwin, Isabella and
Gratiot, is called to meet at Mt. Pleasant next Tuesday, the 14th. The delegate- from Clare county are A. I). G rant,
K, M. Mu^ell, John H. O.-terrout and AV.

Dr. F. f. Sanford wishes to announce
to the public that he is prepared to con-
duet examination aud give counsel,
which will be done free of charge forthe
next Mxty days. The examinations will
be conducted according to the latest
methods introduced at the hospital at
Ann Arbor.
Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Horning and family
arrived Tuesday from ait. Pleasant to
again take up their abode in Claro.
Their many friends here welcome their
return. They will occupy tlie Ed. AVhite
house at tne east end of 5th street, which
Mr. Horning recently purchased and has
caused to receive many fine improvements.
J. AV. Calkins does not intend to commence work this fall upon his new brick
hotel. He will get a greater part of tho
material upon the ground this fall and
winter aud be ready to commence operations early the coming spring. The
plans and specifications are drawn, showing that the building is to be a beautiful-
structure and a great credit to our town.
It will be three stories high with a basement. Mr. Calkins never does anything
by halves, anyway.
Clare Division No. 40, Knights of Pythias, held a meeting at the armory last
Friday evening nnd accepted the resigna- -
tion of Sir Knight Captain. F. 3, Todd,-
who was promoted at the Milwatlkoa
conclave in July to the position of regimental surgeon, with rank of major.
Sir Knight CIL Clark was elected captain to fill vacancy. The boys passed a
resolution of thanks to their retiring captain for the interest he had manifested
in the division during his term of office,
to wliich Bro. Todd responded with afew
well chosen remarks.
AVe sold one of our Goodenouph baud
cylinder newspaper presses, whicli was
shipped on Monday to a gentleman in
the southern prti-t of the state, who is
about to embark in the newspaper business. AVe have another on hand which
we will dispose of at a bargain. Tlie
press will print four pages of a 5-column
paper at one impression, and do good
newspaper work. Those who have used
a Goodenough, or seen them work, consider them superior to a Washington.
We will mako somebody a bargain on
said press, if sold at once.
