Our village, (Mt. Louis) with a-population (hypothetic-ally) of i>,200, can
probably boast of more places of business than any other town of its size in
the State, and yet trade is far from
being- substantially overdone. Below
wc enumerate a few of the general
business places in town: There aro
twenty general grocery stores and
places where groceries arc sold, ten
dry goods stores; two clothing houses;
three hardware's; two jewelry stores;
four millinery stores; three drug
stores; five hotels; two restaurants;
nine saloons; four wholesale liquor
houses; oue beer bottling establishment; one bakery and confectionery
store; two banks; three livery establishments; one grain elevator; two
saw and planing mills; one grist mill;
two sash and blind factories; one

—Tlie entire Republican ticket in

The agricultural interests will be developed and the political atmosphere

—M. O. Austin, of Clare, wns elected constable by just two majority. If
his uncle, Mr. Barnes, had received

—Though John Post was defatted
by Albert: A. Shaver, for Supervisor,
he need feel no chagrin at the result.
It was a question of party, not of
merit. As between these two the
people had little choice, and would
have been equally satisfied with either, as men alone. The Republican
party simply desired a Republican
supervisor.
—Tuk Pitkms was elected to office
also. At the town meeting Monday,
it was voted lo publish the proceedings of the town board in this paper,
and pay for the same out of tlie
contingent fund. The vote was unanimous and given so heartily as to assure us of their good will. Mr. N.
Bicknell has our thanks, and the
credit for his thoughtfulness in calling attention to the matter.

entitle "A Politkal History of Clare
County." It will commence at about
the year 1ST2, when Geo. L. Hitchcock, Hiram Woodruff, and others,
who claim to be straight republicans,
bolted the republican ticket and set
up one of their own. It will toll how
they defeated the party, how they

If Ave arc not greatly mistaken, the
late attempt of J. S. Iloldon, editor of
the Farwell Register, to crush out his
rival, the Clare County Press, will result in his own destruction and the
building up of his rival. By the villainous means he has employed to
root out all opposition to him in the
county, he has gained nothing but
the contempt of all fair thinking men,
and whatever may be thought, hereafter, of Goodenough, less will be
thought of J. S. Holden.— St. Louis

fare-well, Mr. Green.
Mr. W. W. Green, the lawyer of
the nasal twang, has left -the county
for the county's good. He has gone
back to Hillsdale, whero he can live
on liis ma, and eke out a livelihood
with varnish brush and pot. Gone
lo pot as il were. Gone, but not forgotten. Mourned by the ring whose
tool he was, he will Jong retain a
Green spotintheirmemory. He was
a man of great parts—part clown and
part fool. He knew a good deal—for
him. He Avas very smart—and made
his clients smart, too. He could talk
louder, blow longer, lye faster, and
eat more than any man ever known
in Ibis ffcclioii. He was a genuine
carpet-bagger, and always carried it
with him. He was religious, and
good—good for nothing. He could
make a great temperance speech, and
drink a pint of whisky at once. He
was always kind—kind of soft, and a
tear of sympathy generally dangled
at the end of his nose. His feet wero
big, and well-filled, but liis head
Was small, and quite empty. In
appearance, he resembled Barnum's
What-is-it, aud looked very much
like a traveling side-show, though in
reality ho was a whole circus hiipself,
from clown to jack-ass. Biit his greatness was nevCr fully appreciated, except by a chosen few, who saw their
own likeness dimly reflected in him.
They sought to emulate his highness,
but came far short of their model.
Failing in this, they sent him. adrift.
They would not tolerate among them
a man greater than they, so poor Mr.
Green had to go the way of ait old
ami useless tool, he was thrown away,
and cast amlc. Who will fill his vacant chair remains to b.e seen, but
there are several candidates.

State was republican, Uu> county it- |
publican, and having received nonii-l
nations, I bey wen! electcsi!l to all the;
important positions. They had all)
the machinery under (heir control.'
They and (heir offices .for their own ;
personal ends. ThCy-J'oruicd a little
ring of their own, worked for each
other, benefitted each other, aud
spent thousands of dollars from county funds among tbeuisclves. "Themselves first, the public last," was.'their
motto, and they lived ftp toil wholly.
But things look a change. They (
were lc-rt out by, their parly, and j
turned out by tbe people. Without j__
officelh«y were nothing. They must.
havo it. They sought all means to,
secure it. They packed the convoiw-
lions, they bullied the dclcgalcs, and j
when not nominated bolted the regu-J
lar ticket and set one up of their own
lo oppose; it. They were republicans
only in name, republicans only for
office, republicans only for tlie most]
selfish of selfish ends, Give them
office, and then they wore republicans;
refuse them office, and they wore
ready to kill the republican party.
Office, office-, office was what they
wanted, and they seemed devil possessed to gel it. Their desires were
frustrated. Tbe people hail lost confidence in liiein, and the best men
they could possibly put up was sure
of defeat. To-day 1 hey stand condem-
ecl by the people- as unworthy of trust.
Their influence is gone, their numbers are few, and they will soon sink
into the oblivion which their own
conduct so justly merits. .
On Monday last, they met another
crushing defeat. Possessing theparty i
machinery, they endeavored to make
nominations; republican iu name, but
