THE SOCIETY.
Some eight' years ago this spring
measures were taken to organize a
Methodist Society in Clare. The
country was new, religious acntament
wasn't its predominant characteristic,
the people were few and far apart,
and the^membcrship was nescessarily
weak. But as the good Book directs,
they counseled one with another, they
were strengthened by the Divine
Spirit, and the First Methodist Society of Clare was organized, They
met as opportunity granted, at the
school house, with the home circle,
and everywhere to accomplish tlieir
allotted task. They labored diligent-
ly, and well. From that time henceforth th _y waxed strong- and prospered.
THE NEW CHUltCII.
They needed a new church, a permanent place of worship, a home of
their own. They decided Ao build

it is owing largely to the efforts of

not enumerated upon any ,*ub.-cr_p-

and anxiety cannot be computed in
this life. On the bright Sabbath morning of tbe Fifteenth of June* it was
DEDICATED TO GOD.
Entering the portals of the church
the sight that met the eye was surpassingly beautiful. Evergreen foliage of the forest festooned, into graceful forms, clustered around the windows, over the doors, entwined the
chandeliers and decorated the alt«r.
Flowers in profuse abundance diffused their perfume into the air, and the
sweet song of singing-birds sounded
cherrily upon the ear. On tho rostrum in front of the pulpit was arranged an imitation of
AN ANCIENT AI/TAJl,
upon wliich was to be placed tho offerings of the people, their sacrifices
unto the Lord for the building of His
temple. Covered with boughs, 6rna-
mented with golden symbols, tho tiny
flowers peeping out from its green
leaves, it awakened tender emotions,
and in imagination carried one back
to the days of Abraham and Isaac,
and the patriarchs of old. Back of
the pulpit, waa the writing on the
wall, not telling a message of fear and
vengeance, but the glad tidings of a
work AVell-done,

—Mr. J. AV? Catkins is tittiiig up
the building next to the post-office
for a furniture store.
—The band scranaded the officers

—The case of fj. B. Evans against
Clark II, Sutherland, recently argued
in tlio SuprejtfP Coiirtat Lansing, lias
been decided in favor of Mr, Sutherland. This will probably end the
controversy.
—It is with unqualified pleasure
that The Pkksi. announces thc election of Mr. A. J. Doherty as assessor.
Mr. Doherty is a graduate of the State
Normal School "of New Arork, andis
everyway qualified to fill the ofilce.
•—The new county seat at Budd
Lake has* been platted into a village
and named Harrison. The name is
neither pretty nor suggestive. The
word lake should have been used in
connection witli some word suggesting the rare beauty of the location.
—Mr. E. 33ogan has purchased a
part of thestock of Miss AVhitley, nnd
will remove it to Calkinsvillo. Mr.
BoganiB enlarging his store, putting
in a new front, and improving things
generally. Sir. Bogan lost his home
last fall by fire, and everybody will
rejoice in liis prosperity.
—Governor Stevens lias cut his
groin, and is compelled to hobble
around on a square foot and a cane.
While we deeply sympathise with
the governor in his sad bereavement,
still, we are reminded that some good
even comes out of misfortune. This
will jive the governor needed rest.
—The singing at the dedication of
the M. E, church, Sunday, was the
finest we have yet heard in Clare. It
would be a good plan to drop all organ playing for a tlme^ at least until
the orgaoigtS would-learn to play »o&'

drown the sQuncl of titb singing. This
choir did splendidly.
—Subscribers will please get their
Pi-Esa cither at tho post office or at
this office, one place or the other regularly, to save us considerable trouble
and time. AVhy? Because when a
person gets a paper at this office, the
nai-ne must be written on a slip of paper, which paper is placed beside the
mailing book, and constantly referred
to, or an error occurs. All this takes
time, when haafo 10 most required.
—_3arly AVednesday morning last,
smoke was seen issuing from tho
house occupied by Miss AVhitley, and
on examination revealed the interior
to be in flames. The newly organized
hook and ladder company were
promptly on hand and did good service in extinguishing tlie flames. The
house was owned by Mr. C. H, Suth-
•erlaud, and was not insured. Miss
Whitley had recently moved in, and
Was quite ill at the time.
—The case of Clare county against
the Auditor General el al the decision of the circuit court against the
county has been confirmed, without
costs. The opinion has not yet been
received, and should it be held that
the resolution of the legislature directing the auditor general to pay
over the money in question to the
several counties is unconstitutional,
that resolution would be inoperative,
and the money could not be so paid.
—If Frank Alger isn't the awfullest
young fellow in Clare, some one else
is. The most dignified man that ever
held such a position is Governor Ste-"
vens, sexual of the M. E. church. He
is the one who seats the congregation,
and it is done with grace and ability.
He ia a fine looking statue, dresses in
good tast«, and wears a highly polished collar that nearly reaches his
ears, as if his shirt was on wrong side
up. Frank called him clear from in
front just to ask him if he could spit
over that collar!
<—'Squire James IL Scoley, of Arer-
non, is popular among the young
folks, and when they want ajob done
up neat and in an awful hurry he can
accommodate them. One of the shortest courtships recently heard of was
that of Arthur Potter and Flora" Bishop. Arthur is said to have seen his
lady love coming down the road. He
offered her brother a heifer if the
brother would propose for him% Hie-
did it. Thereupon the couple proceeded to the 'Squire* who-legalized
their fjeiieitvous intentions.

The announcement that a new edition of AVcbster's Unabridged Dictionary has just been published, containing many new and valuable features, suggests the thought that buying a Dictionary is a good deal like
buying: an egg or a watch; a bad one
is not cheap at any price. AVebster
being the standard authority for the
English language, he naturally ha«
many imitators,- but imitators are
usually held at their true worth by
the public;—who wants a wooden
nutmeg, though it may look over so
much like the genuine article? The
popularity of AVebster is based upon
this principle.
If you want a handy thing to carrv
with you, 11 companion that vou can
always rely upon, and one that will
never tire you, a really vade mecnm,'
we recommend that you get a copy of
the pocket edition of AVebster, with
its 18,000 words and meanings, rules
for spelling, tables of weight 'and
measures, abbreviations, words,
phrases and proverbs from the ancient
and modern languages.
It in printed from new type, and
