in tbe "Story of Achievement" Mr.

d mentioned a considerable number
men to illustrate bis story. Dan-
Webster was not per rutted to

aduated at Dartmouth and be was
disgusted thst he tore bis diploma
i in tbe presence of some of tbe
tee. Watt. Arkwrigbt, Richard

whom persistant effort brought

Pres. Perry iu a few words to the
aae presented tbe diplomas and anther school year became a thing of
ta past.
They risked their lues as tbeir
comrades did. and with thankful
hearts we welcome bome their returning leRions—welcome tliem bome to
the tasks ot pesce. For their work is
not done. While they have been
away new and in-idious dangers bave
sprung up witbin the gstes of tbis
Republic. New perils menace it.
Only tbe courage aod the devotion
to high ideals and to our country's
honor can safeguard tbat bonor
against tbe threats of anarchy, disruption, and decay.
If they would let that dishonor
stand unchallenged, they; would be
false to tbe men wbo fell at tbeir
sides in tbat bell or war overseas.
Tbey would betray, as we would be
tray if we stood by iu sileoce, tbe
heroes, wbose spirits sbouid guide
ns to-day witb a truer and nobler
conrage to stand as soldiers should
stand in this battle for tbe preservation of oar liberties. Theirs is tbe
task to stand unflinching tbat tbis
country may live a flaming beacon
ligbt that wiii guide the weakened
nation, of tbe world tbrougb tbe
dark be urs still tn come before peace
and good will bave been reestablished
ia this world.
Araagements have now progressed
sufficiently that we can state with
some degree of accuracy the plans being made to entertain tbe soldiers
and sailors of Clare county and of
Wise, Vernon aad Gilmore townships,
Isabella connty wbicb are near to us.
About .1500 bas been raised, so tbat
things will not be done on any petty
scale.
Tbe Committee on Invitations are
seeking tbe name of every soldier and
sailor in tbe above territory tbat a
special invitation may be sent to
them. If tbere are any wbo do not receive a card, it is because tbe name
bas not been reported to the cotuiult-
tee.
Perhaps one of tbe most important
festures of any sucb undertaking is
tbe music Tbe committee has been
fortunate in securing Amsden's Military band of Saginaw, considered to
be one of tbe very best bands .in tbe
state. It will give a grand exibition
concert in the Park at 8 p. m , beside
other features during tbe day.
There will be something doing all
tbe time. At 10 a. m. there will ba
street sports and otber attractions.
From 12 to 1:30 basket picnic in Waterworks Park. At ".-.OO p. m. a ball
game at Wbeaton Ave. Park. A fast
team will play the city team, At rl 00
the Red Cross will Berve dinner to the
soldiers and sailors and no one need
worry about their having a full meal.
Soldiers and sailors on arrival io
the city will report at tbe City Hail
wbicb will be headquarters, More
particulars and full program next

In applying for bis final citizenship
papers, Tony Slees. waa asked several questions by.. United States Erato-

"Wbo !_ tbe Governor of Michigan?" Siesa was ask*.

After similar answers to several
more questions, Judge Ray Hart de

"It is poor policy in bome canning
to use rubber jar rings a second vear,"
declares Miss Anna ft. Cowles of East
Lansing, State Leader of Girls of
Canning Clubs. New robbers of good
quality are absolutely essential for
consistent success in canning
tops sbouid aleo be inspected carefully, as tbey must fit perfectly.
Even a new rubber is not necessarily a good one, lor tbere are many
rubbers of poor grade on tbe market
today. Miss Cowles gives tbe following tests for an acceptable ring:
1. A rubber sbouid stand a reasonable amount of stretching and polling without breaking and sbouid always return to its original shape.
2. A good rubber will not crack or
show results after being pinched between the thumb and fore finger-
3. For pint and quart jar. a robber
s'.ould be 5-ttJ or an inch wide, 1 12 of
an incb thick, and bave en inside diameter of 2 1 4 inches.
4. Color is no index of quality.
Good rings can be eitber red, wbite
or black.
Full information on canning subjects may be had by writing to- Mies
Anna B Cowles, State Leader Girls
Clubs. East Lansinv.
For tbe vear ending May t, the
city of Iabpeming bad 18 cases before
tbe local court on charge of being
drunk. At least a tbia'd of tbeee came
from points outside of town, leaving
about a dozen from tbe town proper.
Tbis was as against 116 cases of
drunks of the previous year ,and up
to the time tbe state went dry. A

JULY THE FOURTH
By Edgar A. Guest.
At* when a little babe is born the parents cannot guess
Tlie story of the future years, their grief or happiness.
So came America to earth, the child of higher things,
A nation that should light the way for all men's visionings:
A land with but a dream to serve, such was our country then.
A prophet to prepare the way of liberty of men!
Great was the courage of the past; the tyrants power was strong,
Few spoke the praise of Freedom then, few sang her battle song
Until the bell of liberty rang out upon the morn
And told the world in Freedom's name a nation had been born
A nation that should lead the way to glorious years to be
Should pledge its soul to sacrifice to set all people free.
This is the heritage we hold who celebrate today:
We are the children of the men who dared to lead the way;
We are the sons of men who taught by fine examples true
The^lory they would have us keep, the deeds they'd have us do.
They did not serve in selfishness, nor teach us money love,
They placed a nation in our charge with Freedom's flag above.
I wonder do their spirits know the glory of today_
And can they see our banner fly three thousand miles away?
And do they know in Freedom's name on foreign soil onr sons,
Seeking no conquest for themselves, have braved the tyrant's guns.
Oh God, fling back heaven's curtains nowl Let our forefathers see
That what was but a dream to them at last has come to be.

New robbers of good quality are absolutely essential for consistent success in canning tops sbouid aleo be inspected carefully, as tbey must fit perfectly. Even a new rubber is not necessarily a good one, lor tbere are many rubbers of poor grade on tbe market today. Miss Cowles gives tbe following tests for an acceptable ring: 1. A rubber sbouid stand a reasonable amount of stretching and polling without breaking and sbouid always return to its original shape. 2. A good rubber will not crack or show results after being pinched between the thumb and fore finger- 3. For pint and quart jar. a robber s'.ould be 5-ttJ or an inch wide, 1 12 of an incb thick, and bave en inside diameter of 2 1 4 inches. 4. Color is no index of quality. Guest. At* when a little babe is born the parents cannot guess Tlie story of the future years, their grief or happiness. So came America to earth, the child of higher things, A nation that should light the way for all men's visionings: A land with but a dream to serve, such was our country then. A prophet to prepare the way of liberty of men! Great was the courage of the past; the tyrants power was strong, Few spoke the praise of Freedom then, few sang her battle song Until the bell of liberty rang out upon the morn And told the world in Freedom's name a nation had been born A nation that should lead the way to glorious years to be Should pledge its soul to sacrifice to set all people free. This is the heritage we hold who celebrate today: We are the children of the men who dared to lead the way; We are the sons of men who taught by fine examples true The^lory they would have us keep, the deeds they'd have us do. They did not serve in selfishness, nor teach us money love, They placed a nation in our charge with Freedom's flag above. I wonder do their spirits know the glory of today_ And can they see our banner fly three thousand miles away? And do they know in Freedom's name on foreign soil onr sons, Seeking no conquest for themselves, have braved the tyrant's guns. Oh God, fling back heaven's curtains nowl Let our forefathers see That what was but a dream to them at last has come to be. Wilson-Dille. From Uarrlsoa Corresponalent.
