the F. & P. M. road.
The Evart Cornet Band is one of
the very best bands in the State, and
under the direction of its accomplished leader, Mr. E. M. Bceman, has
gained an enviable reputation. Tho'
not large in numbers, every horn docs
its full duty, the arrangement being
particularly tine, giving remarkable
evenness of tone, smoothness and harmony. Tliey have elegant uniforms,
expensive instruments and are attractive in appearance. Added to
this, tliey have invited the Beed City
band, the Farwell band, and the Clare
band to participate in the excursion,
thus forming

—The Rev. AV. II. AVare. and his
wife have long made it their special
business to do their worst to injure
Tab Pjikss. Tliey have had to "eat
dirt" lately, acknowledged themselves wrong, and promised their
Presiding Elder to do better. Yet
they kept right on. Theae parties
could find better employment for
their valuable time, the BeverendSir,
by paying up some of liis old debts at
Mount Pleasant and elsewhere, and
the woman in keeping less in the
streets and more at home tending the
baby, scrubbing the dishes, cleaning
the floor and doing tho washing, instead of leaving these arduous duties
to her little manny and grown up
sons.
Tlie Village Council.
At the last meeting of the village
council several ordinances were passed. Tliey were good ones, just what
was needed, and gave general satisfaction to all not interested by their
enforcement. One M'as to prevent
gambling, another to license auctioneers and showmen, and another
to prevent hogs from running at large
in the streets, President Newth and
Trustee Horning antagonize these
resolutions, and are trying their best
to make them inoperative.
Mr. Horning bases his opposition
on the grounds of economy, That is
his plea, but, the real reason is opposition to incorporation, and he is carrying that feeling to such extremes
tliat he i.s securing the ill-will of his
associates, and of nine-tenths of the
inhabitants of the village. The economy dodge is all bosh. By requiring
fees from auctioneers and showmen
would many times more than pay all
expenses incurred, while the suppression of gambling is a duty that all
men owe to tlieir children and families. On the Fourth of July a "wheel
of fortune" cleared $81 in Glare, contrary to a law of the State, and
which should have sent its pro- *

Mr. Newth takes the same ground,
but goes further, and as President of
tlie village, refuses to sign official
documents. Mr. Newth took an oath
to perform the duties of that office.
In refusing, ho lias sworn to a lie. If
he cannon act, he should resign; if he
will not act, he should be removed.
Of tho other officers, it can be said
that they evidently desire to do their
duty fairly and well, as conscientious
men and good citizens. Tlieir course
meets' as warm approval as the opposition does severe condemnation.
