"The tiro hydrants of tMs oity were
never in the condition they are now," remarked tbe righteously indignant citizen, as he took a fresh chew and planted
his heels on tap ol the stove, "and J shall
rise up in my wrath and do somo
mighty loud talking iE fche city officers
don't see that thoy aro placed in proper
condition. The fire department would
now have to carry a map of the wator
works and a shovel to Und some of the
hydrants. But I suppose" he added, as
ho delivered something less than a quart
of diluted m'co'.ine on tlie "sidei of a barrel
of sauer kraut, "that I might swear
enough to send me to the lowest corner
of hades, and it would do no good until
their condition is demonstrated at one
good, big blaze."

The continued bienni-il juggling of the
game and fish law by tho legislature hue
resulted in placing upon the statute
books one of the most unintelligible
acts it would have been possiblo to make-
By cartful reading it has been discovered that the catching of bass in any
manner tu* at any time of year in this
state is now \. rohibited. In connection
with this discovery the Saginaw Cbur-
ier-ffoi*rtid'says: There is going to be
somo more trouble over the celebrated
game and fish law as passed by the lute
legis afcme. The more the law developes
and uulbids, the greater wonder it creates
i« tho niiflds of those who have (xperi-
ence in;defiling m laws. Now features
are discovered d.n"Jy and new sources of

of Howell,
When it was found that fishing with a

from a respected farmer's wile a three
gallon crock of about No, 8 boot grouse
nicely covered over with about an inch of
good butter, and paid ortamery price for
the stuff. "It would tear off your suspender buttons to road in the newspapers
bow tho 'innocent farmers' must beware
of the innumerable swindles that are p r-
petrated upon the unsuspecting ruralists,
and how the poor farmer is being guiled
by us merchants, when you think of some
of tho frauds that th -ge innocents spring
oa us dealers. It was always a oonum-
drum to me to figure out just how tho Almighty had figiued to plape all of the
truly good at tilling the soil and the
rogues in the lines ol trade, as you read
m tho farmer's eohimn, until 1 went into
tn dc, when I found that it was all a
hoax."
Tho kicker had spread himself at full
length on th» sugar counter and planted
his No. 10 stogies on tho cheeso box, when
the hustling citizen came m for his Sun •
day supply of provisions, and whilo being waited upon was looking over his receipt for taxes which ho had just received. The kicker observed what the h.
c, was looking over, said with a touch of
sarcasm, "wall, taxes air tarnal high, as
nsal, I Buppose."•- Tbe4i. cheered ovtsy
his glasses and remarked that while they
may seem high, as long as they were
justly equalized, ho felt that it was tho
duty of all citizens to willingly pay tho
state's claims upon them, for it was an
obligation of the people. "That's jest
tho pint," hastily put in tho kicker, as he
swung his brogans off tho cheeso boS and
tipped over half a bushel of cranberries.
"You feller's what's making a pile of
money out of your factories and grindin'
us poor laborers down to almost nothin'
never whs known to pay your share.

i would appear. But j.ow it if* held that
black b,>s8 cannot be caught, sold or
uatoa in-tlio fllsrto of Michigan without
incurring the penalties of tho law.
Buss have been one of tho most popular
fish on the market and on tho tables ot
the people of this state for years. They
have been cmigbfc by tho thousands this
year and, sold regularly. No effort has
been mado to enforce this section of tho
la . lUslilTraceutly, but from now on it
will be upheld strictly if found to be
constttutio-. al.
The section referred to provides thafc it
shall bw unlawful for any person to catch
black JbiiES with any sort of net, or to
offer them for sale, or to usie them. It is
also made the duty of all persons who
shall catch any porch wo:ghing less than
four ounces, or any pike, pickeral or cut-
_ fish weighing less than four ounces, or
j any black bass of any description, to ro-
} placethem in tho water unharmed. Pail-'
ure to^dc tMsie also punishable by a fine
and imprisonment.
The first provision refers only to fishing with a net, hut tho second evidently
includes all manner of fishing, so that
black bass eannot r foe., caught, sold or
eaten in tlie state. The provision regard-?
ing perch, i_iekerel, etc., prevents them
being sold at lees weight than prescribed,
and prosecutions for violations of this
.section will probably be begun shortly by
Game ancl Fish Warden Carpenter.
Last week the sales of raw wool in
Boston, exceeded anything of the kind
for five years. Tho practically closing of
the year for this staple reveals tho fact
that it exceeds by more than 28,000
pounds that iu 1892, tho largest up to
that date. Tho price too is far in advance of the past threo years. Added to
