Fifth Street.
After a lingering illness of sever-
al years, Jas. Thompson, died at
his home early Ug(i Friday morning. Death was due to asthma and-
liver trouble.
Mr. Thompson was well known in
Clare, ■ having lived here for the
past eighteen years During the
greater port of that time he was in
the employ of the Clare City Flouring Mills. He was born -sixty-seven
years ago in Hamilton, Ont. Jan,
2d, 1868 he was united \n marrfage
with Miss Ellen Crossen, also of
Hamilton. Eighteen years ago
they come with their family to Clare
where they have since remained

and eight phjldrenj Mrs. H. C. Caldwell, of Ridgeland, Wis, James, of
Freesoil, William, of Rosebush,
Frank, of Oroswell, Mrs. P. A. Bennett, Robert, Fred and Floyd, of

the home Monday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Maxwell.

"State Saving Bank of Harrison" Succeeds

The people of Clare county will be
interested in the reorgiuzatiou of
the oldest banking house in the
county,^ and'the information that
the bank at the county seat is now
to be known as, the "State Savings
Bank of Harrison." The first meet-
iug of the board of directors was
held on Tuesday, and thus the capital of the county steps into line
with a full nedgeu'Bsuie imufc of substantial responsibility, officered by
some of the best men of the county,
and the stock of which is owned and
controlled by well known Clare
county citizens, as well as several
who have long been known as*
among the subtantial men of €trajlot.

The banking-house of L. Saviers
&Oo. was established in Harrison
in 1833, by L. Saviers, of St Louis.,
and,was owned by himself and wife
with Carlton Abbot as it flrBt cashier. It had 'conducted a. general
banking business-■since that time,
and was the first bank to open, for
business in the county; Mr. Abbott
was succeeded after a nutfjber of
years by F. Weatherhead, who proved a most efficient manager In
charge during the years he was con*
nected with the institution, and
only retired because of ill-health.
He in turn was followed by 0. R,
Giddings of St. Louis, Who will continue under the new arrangement,
both Mr. Weatherhead and Mr,
Giddings becoming stockholders,

Frank Jackson and the ice upon
Lake Dewey met in collision >a few
evenings since, and as a result
Frank has been out of commission
for several days. The doctors first
thought (.here was a concussion of
the brain but subsequent developments have shown their suspicions
to have been unfounded. Frank is _
better, and the ice is still hard. •

giueering corps at that, point, and
whose work is to make surveys on
the* St. Mary river and various harbors near by, for the purpose of ascertaining the needs of-navigation.
He is a very pleasant gentleman
