Romance Culminates in Happy Wedding
After Thirty Years of Courtship.
Clare society was all agog on
Wednesday over a rumor that
Alonzo M. Davy ;would that evening brin^rtd^OlOTe"a-Tiriuer and = ths
throng that assembled at the.depot
5to accord a welcome testified strongly to the interest which was had in
"Lou's" matrimonial venture.
At the parsonage of t the First IV}

a'a old-time friend of the parties-, united in marriage Alonzo M Davy of this
city, and Miss Sadie A. McGrath,
of Detroit. Mr. and Mrs. Davy will
reside in Clare, wiere the gro mi
has long been the efficient bookkeeper in the store's of "Davy &Co.
The marriage"1 is the happy culmination of a courtship of thirty
yeare. Tht- bride is a sister of tins
lat- John W_ McGrath, justice of the
supreme court, of Michigan, and for
years a prominent member of the
Wayne county bar.
The removal of »'Lon." from the'
bachelors' table at the Hotel Cal-
kins takes away a character that
has for several years been a fixture
there, and for whom the other occupants of the table had lonf; since
givt-n up hope in this line To them
the removal of one "of the table's
occupants" was the cause, of much
jollity, and now that he has succumbed to the inevitable the other
members of tbe Club are enjoying
tho event with even greater pleas-
ure.
The Courier extends to Mr nnd
Mrs. Davy its most cordial congratulations, and wishes them many
years of happiness.

Ex-Senator Made to Appear in Many Boles,
But this Is the Latest.
The biggest joke of the season appears in the following special .from
Lansing to Detroi' papers last Saturday. The enterprising correspondent does not appear to be content to leave Ex-Senator Poherty
to run the Btato fai-,but now inflipts
new duties upon him as "Attorney"
for the Pu:lman Palace Car Co,
Following is the text of the dispaloh:
Lansing, Michl, Jfcan. 18. The
state tax commission has received
uotice from the Pullman Palace Car
CO. that it is not Satisfied with the
valuation of $50,000 placed on its
property in this state," and that, itx
attorney, ex-Betjator Doherty, of
Oline will arrange to appear before
the boaru on behalf of the company.
Doherty was fhe recent candidate
lor the*position of state railway
commissioner and was turned down
by- Gov. Warner. Other railways
are notifying tha board of' their desires to be heard relatives to tho
valuation of their property and it is
evident that the board will havo
numerous complaints to hear during
the next month.
A WARM SESSION!
Renewed Effort to Submit Local Option Question in This County Produces Amusing'
Situation. .'' -:
After Unmercifully ' Abusing Ex-Mayor
Lacy, Rev. Strickland Trie* to Retain /
Him in Case. . '
A. feature of llie local option
movement in thi3 county came to.
the jsurface yesterday, and which
"will" aflonTtome^ am"ufenerilF-"to
those who have observed the treat-
muni which Ex-Mayor A.-.J. Lacy
nan received from R>-v Strickland,
the chifrmovwr in tlia af tempt to
bring about a removal Of the saloons, During tlif) fall and even
up to tho time of the matter going
before the board of supervisors, the
minister referred io lost no-opportunity to abuse Mr. L;.\cy, and to
charge him with being about everything but a gentleman. Lacy did
not lose much sleep over, tlie tirades
of the agitator, but continued upon
his own course, keeping entirely
free from theeonlroversy. The board
refused to / Ptiimiit the question as
iias been before explained, and
those associated with JMr. .Strickland threatened mandamus proceeding. On Wednesday, to the
Surprise of Lacy, Rev.' Strickland
dropped into his office and wanted
toengage him to bring the proceedings. Like most member's of the
fraternity, the ex-mayor 'did -not
decline to outer the case, but in
addition to the usual fee demanded
from Mr. St,rick, land an apology for
the treatment previously received
from him. Just all that was said
within the next few minutes in the
lawyer's office has not been given
out, but it is aunouined that Lacy
is not; employed in the case, The
visitor admitted that he supposed
Lacy was mayor for a Jong tjme
after his term had really expired,
and also intimated that he might
have gone too far with some of his
othor jemarks, but the hatchet between the gentlemen has not yet
been interred. »
Mr. Strickland went to Harrison
for a transcript of the proceedings
of the board, and it is reported that
I A> lyncher, of Mt.Pleasaut, will
take the matter to the courts.

The board of public works at a
meeting he'.d on Monday evening
adopted a resolution favoring the
purchase from the Traverse Citjj
Iron Works of a gas producer for
the water plant, wherein it is claimed a great saving can be made in
the expense of fuel. In sliort, tho
rnanijfacturers. offer to guarantee
that the expense for fuel with their
maobine will not exceed $1.00 per
day for the three hundred sixty-five
days of the year. The cost of the
machine is* $1,015, completely in
stalled. The company offers to accept $250 on May 15th, and 850 per
month thereafter until paid for, the
amount to be considered rental because cf the. guarantee, and the
amounts so paid to apply ^ipon'-the
purchase price.
The council was to have met on
Wednesday evening to act upon the
proposition, but the meeting was
postponed until next Monday night
when the a'dermen will determine.
If the machine will do what is
plaimed for it, (and a" guarantee
goes wi.Ui it) there should he no delay in the purchase, heoaus.e the
saying in fuel cost will nearly if not
^quite pay the entire cost. The producer makes its'gasfrom hard coal
or coke, ftnd the change from gas to
gasoline under any emergency can
be made in a few seconds., according
to the'etaims of the manufacturer.
