J! LIVELY CONTEST!
Candidates For The 'Constitutional Convention'
Too Numerous for Comfort.
Hard 'Struggle 1,-bked foi* at Gladwin' next
- Tuesday,
These are busy days among the
Republicans of the. 28th senatorial
district, and it's all because; .very
county has an aspirant for the
three month's job at Lansing, making a new state constitution,,
A few days age a ..state paper intimated that three counties in the
district with a majdluty of the votes
in the convention had'a cinch, and

that such three counties included
Olare. In other words the writer
Sized up the situation as being one
one in which the counties in question would name the delegates. Latest reports indicate that the number
of candidates throughout the district
has rather interfered with the idea
first advanced, and now it appears
to be evsry-body's race, although
Clare's candidate has so far been
able to demonstrate his capability
and popularity as to feel assured
that he will be a winner.
The Clare comity convention at
Harrison yesterday endorsed George
J. Cummins, ex-prosecuting attorney, and. respected member of the
Clare County bar. The Courier
has several times intimated its disgust with the fact that under the
act of the legislature. "No Democrat
need apply ," in a supposed nonpartisan affair, yet it is a pleasure
to say a word of commendation for
a man'of the breath 'and standing of
George J. Cummin's.
The Democrats will have no ticket
in the field, and the minority must
rest content with the action ofthe
Gladwin convention, and it is to be
hoped that Clare's candidate will be
successful.
At yesterday's convention at Harrison to select the delegates, Mr.
Oummins named the following:
D. E. Alward, Clare.
L. Ii. Kelley,.Farwell.
Sup. Huber, Hamilton.
Wm. Temple, Redding.
John Qbinn, Harrison.
J. F. Balsley, Arthur.
The resolutions declared for
Clare's candidate, and in effect demanded that all new propositions
which might be placed iu the constitution should submitted to the
people separately. In other words,
it would appear as if the Clare Re^
publicans don't have an abundance
of faith in the ultimate adoption of
the convention's work.

.The published program will .be
carried out in detail, with numerous
other features added. For the big
basket picnic, which is directly in
chafi-ge of D. E. Alward the following excellent program has been prepared, and which opens on east 5th
street at 10:30 a. m.:

Following the program a basket

spacious shade which lines the
lawns of that popular thoroughfare.
For this feature every farmer is invited to come, bring the family and
the basket and participate in a good
old fashioned time.
At one o'clock the trap shoot and
ball game opens at the park, and
one price admits to both.
At four o'clock some lively horse
races will be held on north McEwan
street, followed by the baloon ascension, and tn the evening there
will be fun for everydody, especially for those desiring dancing, as
the firemen are preparing for a
grand ball at Duncan's hall, to
which all are invited. .
The theatres will be> in full blast
day and evening, and any number of
free attractions will be provided to
drive away the cares and troubles of
the visitors.
•Music all day and evening by the

organizations are up to date in
every respect.
The firemen are and have been
working hard to-make the event a
