Clare's Celebration on Wednesday Greatest !n
History-ofthe fire-Department,
The celebration on Wednesday
was a success in 6Very particular.
From the start in the' morning. until the lights disappeared in the
evening there was no indication of
boieteroi\snes-j .or siicli .revels* as"
usually appear upon such occasions:
From start to finish there was every
indications of- a disposition' to be-
orderly and decorious, and no apparent disposition k to make _ disturbance was 'mahifest.-• Mayor
Benner, assisted by the firemen and
numerous citizens policed the streets
during the entire day and had no
(.rouble to keep perfect order.

E. Alward and Jos. Hudson was a
complete success in 6very particu4
lar'j and was a credit to the pror
motors. Tl_e assemblage was . addressed by ex-senator Jason WoocL
man, of Paw Paw, ex-senator I, R.
Waterbury, of Hastings, and Lieut
Gov. P. H. Kelley. The addresses
were all well* deceived and proved
pleasing to the listeners. 'Vocal
sol,os by Mrs . G, B_. Wells and.
music by the Dover and Farweli
bands added much to the occasion.
The-sports were _ant_recl into with,
zest by everybody and li was evident that the people were'* out for
f _.&,- ^ - - ...'."■••.
Fully 4,000 visitors were present
and all pronounce the day to have
been a success. Following is the
list of prjies awarded: ,'...
The Trap Shoot at the ball-ground
at one o'clock resulted.in a Harri-*
son -man-carrying awaw the money,
While the Becohd was divided be-
tweon Harrison and Clar^men, and
the third between two Farwell contestants. The score was as follows:

£he horse races gave excellent
satisfaction and were hotly contested. The rosultwas as follows:

The baloon ascension following
tho racing was a failure because of
poor inflation, aud was mucti i-egret-
Ited by the management as the large
crowd confidently looked for &- success in (.his particular.
The ball game'between Evart arid
Coleman was too one-sided to "be
interesting. Coleman had jihe best
of the contest from the start, and
Evart appeared really . lonesome
from the first to the ninth. The
score was 20 to 1 in favor of Coleman.

Thelaominees of the 28th district
for the convention,...which nomin-,

-are as follows: '• -
Attorney Smith, of Alcona
Judge Woodriifl, of Bosoommon
Engene Foster, of Gladwin.,
Olare wasn't in it. From every indication it appears as if the old-
time combine is broken, ^and the
smaller counties bave determined to
to have a look-in themselves. "Missaukee, Olare and Iosco have heretofore occupied the dress circle seats,
in 28th _ .district conventions, and
those" classed among the "And
others" have obediently voted andre-
ceived the glad hand and went home.
Its too "bad thai so able a man as
Clare's candidate should have been
thrown, but George waited just a
little too long before reaching for
bis share. It is hinted that Misssu-
kee,; when it appeared impossible
for her candidate to land, decided to
give Olare a parting salute in the
.shape of s vote against Cummins,.
Missaukee leaves the district next
year, henco her disposition to heave
the last dornick.
.,ThO convention, in common with
with mo'st others in the State,
smacked of the usual political jugging, rather than the expression of a
desire to select the yery best available men to frame a Constitution.
It affords jobs for office seekers and
good fellows, will cost the, state
nearly a quarter of million dollars
