HALLOWE'EN
Much Merriment Indulged in and Considerable Damage Done Last Evening in ~
Clare.'
Misplaced'sign's, soaped windows,
missing buggies and' other, vehicles
were among the evidenc.es of, the
high carnival held in , the city
last evening. In .the main, the
work was .that of genuine mis-
chievou'sness .rather than malice,
but , in a lew instances material
damage, "was done to -property, and
tiutnei-oua threats of ari'es.t are
heard upon the streets. Overturned
outbuildings and broken glass contribute to the reasons, for the wrath
disclosed by several business men.
In one instance" the intruders
evidently -reaii__ed. their -' wrong
doing, A large glass was-broken in
the door of Justice Maynard'soffice,
and this morning lie found upon the
floor an envelope containing seventy
cents1,-" marked "Pay for the glass,"
and Bfg.ied by "The Gang.1«. This
hardly satisfies the .Court and he
insists that arrests will follow' the
apprehension of the parties.
Pranks of youngsters *x_pon occasions of this'kind are looked upon
by the general public as Jokes, but
when young men go out; with the
apparent deliberate idea of destroying or injuring property, it is time
that they were learned. a lesson in
decency.

Archie A Smith..
TJLie, community was indeed shocked when the news came from Payne,
Paulding Co. Ohio,_of the death of
Archie A. eldest son of Mrs. Elaia
J, Smith.of Sheridan. . He and his

DECLINES THE INCREASE.
(Ill Not Accept a Raise of
$1,000 in Salary, Offered by His District.
THE COUitlBB has'pieasuro- iii informing the people of the 21st judicial circuit that, their circuit judge
is one of the very few ofirce holders
who declines a substantial increase
in salary. The following from the
Mi.. Fieasaiit Times of -today1- explains itself: .
There probably are but few-cases
on record in this state where a man
in public office wouldn't accept an
increase in salary after tlie people
had voted it to him. But Judge
Dodds refused his increase of-salary from thlB county .after it had
passed the board of supervisors by
a handsome majority.. The Judge
said hefore the board met that if a
vote favoring an increase for him
were unanimous', or nearly sok he of
course wonld accept it. But there,
was a little opposition when the
question came to vote last week,
#pd our circuit judge went before
the bounty's 19.representatives, last
Thursday morning,<after the motion
had passed, aud respectfully.declined "to accept the money. And the
Judge then telephoned his request
that Midland county do iiot present
the question. And he also notified
Clare county, which had already
voted unanimously an increase of
$200. that he would not draw from
that county. -The Judge has exhibited in this case an example of unselfishness and devotion to. principle that we are sure are not found
in tlie majority of men.
