OLD CGITY FARM
_n_n>p>A. ••<%>%
uuts NIK mm
Keeper Coil Purchases Seme, Payable in
Apsis. Money to be Used jn.Fapenl
(or New Location.
The present county farm has-been
sold by tho. condmittee to Tfabs. bolt
for $1,400, the amount being payable in April next. The conimlttee
expects to use the, proceeds to settle
for the new eighty purchased south
of Harrison. The report given out
last week that ^Treasurer Goodman
refused to advance $300 for first payment upon the new farm, possibly
conveyed a wrong idea to the reader
but was based upon as reliable information as could be secured ;at
the time. The treasury was and I's.
in a depleted condition, and the
reason he now gives for refusing to
pay the warrant is that there would
not be sufficient money left Januar.v
1st to pay the salaries of the officers. The chairman of the board
and county clerk therefore- issued a
warrant for §300 payable Jan. 15th,
and the money was borrowed at a
Harrison-bank at a low rate of interest.
It is the intention of the committee to purchase the stone-and
some other rough materials for the
buildings this winter. There appears to be a difference of opinion
anion0, the committee and county
officers as to the light to. proceed
witli.the building operations without a vote of the people, but the
policy to be followed has not yet
been determined upon.- It is certainly' evident that even tha people
of the county seat are far from
united as to the wisdom displayed
by the purchase. In other portions
of the county the people are disposed to wait further developments
before passing judgement,. If the
eutire cost of the old farm was to be
figured and placed beside the
amount for which the farm has now
been disposed of it is probable^that
many Would wonder how the county
had been benefitted by the original
investment.
There is every confidence that tbe
committee selected by the board
will carry out to the best of its
ability the wishes . of the board in
the new project, and that in time
the inmates will find , themselves in
anew home with comforts far fn
excess of those now possible, because of the poor equipment provided.
Until the new quarters are completed Keeper Ooit will continue to
care for the "unfortunates.

THE BIGGEST. BUSINESS YET!
Glare Merchants Qverioyeti at the Enorimity
of the Holiday Trade. A Fine Testimonial to Clara's Popularity as
■ a Trading Point.
The Courier last week called
especial attention to the advantages
offered by this city as a point for
holiday shopping, and it is a pleasure to be able to record that thev
business which came was far in excess of any previous yeai*, and that
is saying much. The great volume
of the trade wns upon Saturday,
Monday and Tuesday, and the cash
books in the several stores indicate
that the farmers and people of
neighboring villages entertain that
high regard for Clare as a trading
point which our merchants have
striven long to establish. The deposits in the banks are so far beyond
that of former holiday seasons that
LHU DUabOLUQUUO Ul IHJTO UIOL l_ IJ GUI VB _tJ.'V
worthy of the fullest credence, and
the condition of the stocks the
morning of Christinas is a further
proof that every allegation of the
shop keeper has been fully warranted-
Olare is not only a good point for
trading-at the holiday season, but
for' every day in the year, because
she has progressive, honest s arid
reliable dealers.
