CHILDREN'S DAY

METHODIST CHURCH
More Than a Hundred Young
7 People Make Event a Great .
77.7-' Success. "-
■ Happy children, pretty clothes, attractive decorations together witb unusually-intereating program made
tbe annual Children's Day exercises
at the Methodist churoh last Bnnday
a wonderful success, if the opinions
of many wbo were in the audience
are to be taken seriously. The program was given by members of the
Snnday School under tbe direction of
Mrs. Stella l»ampman. Superintendent. Mrs. Lampman modestly declares tbat tbe credit for the whole
affair should go to tribe committees
that worked so earnestly to.make it a
success, especially tbe Program aud
the Decorating committees. ', Mrs. C.
A. Beading, chairman pf the program
committee, was busy after tbe exercises receiving tbe congratulations of
members of the audience for ber
training of tbe little tots in tbeir
songs and reoitatione. " -7
Tbe Primary Department, with Its
hundred or more little: folks, contributed nearly ail -the numbers. A
abort talk was given by one of the
older boys on tbe "Children's Day
Collection and what is done Witb it".
He explained bow it formerly helped
young people with limited means
.through college as weli as the importance of the student's baving' at least
some ready money while in college.
Tbe collection was larger tban bas
been usually secured.

ONE WEEK LEFT f OR
TUITION BLANKS
Must Be Filed With District
7 Boards by June 26th. tTv
This announcement Is probably unnecessary. An unusually large number of blanks for Application for
Payment of Tuition bave already
been given ont tbia year thru tbe
offices of tbe county commissioners
and at tbe local bigb aobool. However, if any bave not yet secured
blanks tbey oqay be obtained this
next week at either o.t tfoe two Clare
banks.'at tbe bigb sobool or from
the county commisslohers. In order
for the rural district to be required
to pay tbe tuition tbe blanas mnst
be filed not-later tban - tbe fonrtb
Monday in June, which is June 26
The school board may pay. tbe tuition
if the written application is not filed
ae stated above, if tbere is sufficient
money in the general of. the district,
bnt Is not compelled to do so.
The' general ~ provisions of the
tuition taw are now quite familiar to
all. Tbe local district now pays- the
full tuition up to S60 to any - bigb
school in tibe state wblob tbe pdpil
desires to attend. Children for whom
the tuition must be paid are those
wbo are residents of the' district on
tbe fourth Monday of June and who
bave completed tbe elgbtb . grade.
If a child Is a resident on tbe fonrtb
Monday of June and proper application is made, tbe district will have to
pay tbe tuition tbat year no matter
wbere the child moves later. Tbe
application may be filed with either
the director or tbe moderator, bat It
is usually better to file with tbe director. In case blankB are for any
reason not obtainable, a letter from
the parent to the board setting forth
tbat sucb parent Is a resident of tbe
district and requesting payment of
tuition to eome bigb sobool for a
child, and naming tbe child, will be
sufficient notice to the board.
It xhigbt be remarked that there
are usually Some eighth grade graduates, and others wbo bave dropped
ont before finishing bigb school, who
think at tbis time of the year tbat
tbey will-not attend bigb sobool next
fall. Often plana are changed later
In the summer. It costs nothing to
file tbe application for payment of
tuition. It wonld be better to bave
the privilege and not nse it than to
wish in September that tbe application bad been made at tbe required
time. ."■':. - . ..-•.;■

SUCCESS OF
"SYLVIA'
IS ASSURED
Altbo we go to press before tbe
initial performance of tbe operetta,
wblob la being given on Thursday
and Friday evenings of tbis week,
tbe dress rehearsal wbicb . was beld
Wednesday afternoon proved tbat
tbis will be dns of tbs big events of
tbe year. In fact it Is not exaggerating a bit to challenge the musioal
department of almost any bigb
school in tbe state wltbin two or
tbree times tbe size of Olare Higb to
produce a better trained (or better
looking) chorus or an Individual cast
of characters which measure np all
tbe way thru with tbat of "Sylvia."
Every number la good. Arrabelle
and Aramlnta, witb Prince Tobby-
tnm, produce no end of laughter.
The Prince is a real artist In tbis
role. Betty snd William play well
together. Mr. Oanfield has an exceptionally powerfnll bass voice for
a bigb scbool lad. Miss Davy is always good, the quality of her voice
being too well known to require comment. We prophecy tbat the real
surprise of tbe occasslon will be Mr
Birdsall as Sir Bertram. Mr. BLtd/
sail not only possesses a tenor voice
of unuanal richness aqd parity of
tone but also creates atmosphere for
bis part which is unusual in amateur
performances.' "**•'' " ""^~-""*■" "*■***~'
' The stage aetting and costumes add
tremendously . to the- production.
Thru tbe kindness of Mr. H. Mo-
Kerrlng. a thirty foot rear, curtain
was secured from ' the Broadwa-^
Theatre at Mt. Pleasant. This shows
a woodland scene which blende admirably witb tbe bay field (of real
bay, furntabed by Mr. - Grimason).
The oostnmea of tbe ladles and gentlemen of tbe Court are positively tbe
real thing, rented for tbe occasion
from a Detroit containing bonse.
Tbe ohoras and' oast. and director
are to ba congratulated apon having
staged a production of real naarlt.

tbe rates prove satisfactory, they will
solve one of tbe chief rate difficulties
In the state. Tbere has been complaint for years, be points ont, because Chicago shippers could get tbeir
goods into tbe whole of the upper
peninsula on rates so muob cheaper
tban tbose between tbe two peninsulas tbat Detroit aud otber lower
Michigan cities could'not compete.
Under tbe plan outlined in tbe
agreement, each peninsula is divided
into tbree districts. Tbe gronp described in the agreement ae the "Detroit group" includes all of the lower
peninsula lying sontb of a line drawn
across tbe etate just sontb' of these
cities: Grand Rapids, Ionia, Owosso.
and- Flint. From Flint, tbe line runs
north to Bay City, so tbat tbe Detrois
group Included all of tbe Thumb territory, except cities along tbe Saginaw Bay shore. This group also Includes Toledo.
Tbe Grand Baplds gronp Include*
tbe territory* between tbis top Hoe of
tba Detroit gronp and a line draws*
just south of Ludington, Heed Oity,
Leota and Standiab. Tbe Cadillac
gronp Includes all territory In tba
lower peninsula nortb of tbia line-
witb- tbe provision tbat it shall not be
construed to Include cities that already have a more favorable rata
tban tbS«group rate would offer.
In tbe upper peninsula, tbe SanJt;
Ste* Marie gronp runs from tbe etrstte
and St. Mary's River to a line drawn
nortb from ManUtiqne along tbe line
of tbe Manlatique and Lake Superior
railroad. The Marquette group runs
from this line to a line drawn between
Black Creek, nortb of Menominee to
Powell on Lake Superior. The copper country group in eludes tbe west
end of the peninsula.
From any point In the Detroit group
to any point in the Sault See. Marie
group, the class rate on class 1 commodities ia to be SI.14 per 100 pounds;
tbe Grand Rapids group to tbe Saul*
group tbe rate will be *1.03 on class 1
commodities; from the Cadillac group,
tbe rate to tbe Sault group will be Secants on class 1 commodities. The,
rates are progressively lower for lower elaaa commodities so that tbe
sixth class freight wonld go from Detroit to tbe Sault group for 32 cent*
per 100 pounds, from tbe. Grand Ba-
pida gronp for 29 cents, sind from tbe
Cadillac gronp for 27 cents. -.
From Detroit to the Marqoatte
group tbe rate varies from SI.IT 00
first-class freight to 38 dents on elxtb
class; from the Grand Raj-lds group
to Marquette tbe rate wonld be Sl.ov
on flrat class and 30 cents 00 sixth
olass; from tbe Cadillac group i&
would be SI on first class and 28 cents,
on sixtb olass.
In view, of tbe much greater distance from Detroit and Grand Rapids
to tbe copper country than from Chicago to that territory ne agreement
