One of the worse happening in the
line of road construction in tbis section of tbe state occurred abont 4%
miles east of this oity Friday evening
wben about 15y feet of hew road
dropped completely, out of' sight. and
was submerged with water. '-
Chris Reger, of Sheridan townsbip
bas the contract of building tbe road
beginning four miles east of Olare
and continuing east one mile. Mr.
Reeer bad placed-the roadbed in excellent shape tbe entire mile and had
began the graveling thereof. Saturday morning when the then came to
work they found about 150 feet wbicb
crossed a marsh, opt. of sight. -
It is thought by many tbat tbe cause
of tbe accident was an . underground
current and '■ tbe road became ao
heavy that the muck, upon wbicb it
was built, gave way aijd caused the
large opening.
So great was the pulling- power of
the road and the apparent vacancy
in the underground stream tbat over
125 feet of the side of tbe road waa
broke loose and separated from one
to tbree feet at the ends. - At the
oente>i«tumpe, bushestand muck were
pulled for a distance of twenty-five
feet and turned npside down and
partly pulled down. Poles, from 12 to
15 feet bave been pnsbed down in
the center of wbere tbe road formerly laid without finding any solid
bottom. -T"-- -;',*, ;
There can be no estimation placed
as to what It will cost the state and
contractor for a solid fonndation for
tbe road bed. . ":.-■'.'■ ..'■„Y..;., ■ ■<-._."
