TO THE PUBLIC;
Jn tbe last issue of tbe Clare County Courier appeared a Notice to my
self, demanding that I appear at its
office tb look at certain records and
to rectify my notice to the Voters of
this county tbat I bad signed a question aire -Issued by. tbe Anti-Saloon
League, In whicb I. stated that my
answer to tbis Questionable, was
either omitted by the Aoti-Saioon
League or wan omitted by tbe editor
of a Oounty paper. It was not ebarg-
ad by me that tnis'was done intentionally as I bad nob at that time, or
bave I since that time, seen the records furnished Mr! Michael by tbe
said League.' I had no way of knowing wherein toe error, if erro*r it was,
lay. I simply knew that I bad answered and mailed tbe questtonaire to
the senders. This being tbe truth 1j
have no apologv to offer Mr. Mlobeal'
for my notice to the voters to tbat
effect. ■ ■ - '■ ■ 7. ■'. .
I realize that in an election where
Law enforcement was an issue, and
in a county whose citlzensblp are by
a iarge majority itxJ fav*or of law enforcement, - tbat, the issuance of a
printed statement sent broad cast
over tbe County tbat I would not
give a favorable anawer to tbe issue
was highly detrimental, not only to
my own candidacy, but also to tbat
of any otber candidate aitWated in
like manner. ' However, I think in
tbe light of later events I might be
pardoned if L suspected tbe editor of
tbe Courier of not\ being tbe independent, unbiased, non-partisan tbat
be claimB to be; had he been tbis he
would bave given tbe' same publicity
to tbe fact tbat tbe official paper of
tbe League a J a ted at tbe time of publishing this list, tbat it could not
vouch for its own list. Tbat letters
tbat tbey bad mailed . themselves had
been returned, marked "wrong address," snd tbat-tbere was always a
chance of mail being. overlooked,
mislaid or miscarried and while I
have not seen tbe paper I have It on
good authority .that it did so. '
In the last issue tbe Olare Connty
Courier devotes two Inches of space
to tell tbe voters tbat "We are of the
honest opinion that tbe entire report
is not reliable, and it is our bonest
opinion tbat every candidate signed
tbose questionaire and we wonld
suggest to the voter not to take tbose
reports into consideration wben cast
ing tbeir ballots". He tben devotes
tbe larger part of space in a column
and one half tn open championship
of Mr. Crigier and in wbicb he, tbe
editor, states that be is out to clean
np tbe "GANG" and wbile be does
not mention wbo tbe "gang" is, it
would seem to include any citizen
wbo dares to seek a political office in
tbis County without first securing tbe
consent of tbe Editor of tbe Courier,
and aB Mr. Crigier was tbe only one
wbo was fortunate enough to bask in
tbe light of Mr. Micheal'a approbation, I conclude tbat tbe balance of
tbe candidates muse be tbe "GANG".
"It would seem that all other candidates except Mr. Crigier were unfortunate in their use of language.
The Courier quotes me as saying, "If
elected I will handle tbe office according to Law and to tbe best of my
ability." I tboagbt according to
Law . meant tbe enforcement of
"ALL" laws and waa broad enougb
to cover all laws Including prohibition laws. However, my Belt and tbe
otbers not using tbe word "moon*
Shine"'Mr.. Micbeal, at least insinuates, tbat tbe balance of the candidates were "PUSSY FOOTERS AND
GANGSTERS.'' . „..*.- .Y -—'- ■
In conclusion I might say tbat I
was and am a-farmer; I have never
been either directly, or indirectly,
connected witb. liquor or liquor business, I was never drunk in my lite,
can tbe editor of tbe Courier say as
attach?
I do not feel that I, or any of my
opponents are "GANGSTERS" and I
nave notblng to retract. -=•
