Horace Bartlett, a well-to-do retired
Clinton farmer, knows more about cleaning out chimneys than he once did.
The smoke stack of his residence having become filled with soot lie thought
the cheapest way to clean it would be
to set fire to it, consequently "he saturated some cotton with kerosene and
thrust it into the loirer part of the
chimney. The soot took fire in great
shape; so did the house, owing to a defect in the chimney between lhe floors.
Loss 52,000; no insurance.
Wilfred B. Thompson, a well-to-do
Salem farmer, has just been waxed to
the tune of $2,500 by a verdict of damages for slander, in the circuit court.
Mrs. Kate X-. Moore, a uurse.had eared
for a sister of Mr. T., who was sick at
his house. xVbout the time of her leaving several articles were missed and
Thompson came to "Ann Arbor and accused Mrs. Moore of stealing tliem.tell-
ing her he would give her just an hour j
to find them and himself searched her
house. Later the missing articles were
found in his sister's valise, where they
had been all the time. Mrs. Moore!
brought suit with above results. i
year, by sending ten two-cent' stamps
and a printed notice of her marriage
enclosed in the letter, addressed to The
