Newsy Notes and Occasional Occurrences
From our Near Neighbors.
Dr. W. Nichols, of Ann Arbor, shipped over one hundred barrels of pears
last week.
W. W. Watts, of Ann Arbor, has
been elected to the honored position of
H. P., R. & A. M.
The Dundee band has a member only
nice years old. Great noises come from
small places sometimes.
There are thirty-six towns in this
state said to be afflicted with scarlet
fever, and forty-three with diphtheria.
Itis understood that Glare county
has a case of Leprosy; the state board
of health refuse to make the names of
afflicted, public.—Ex.
Dr Watling- was the recipient Saturday of an elegant gold headed cane
suitably inscribed, from the dental
class of _r92 of the University of M. —
Washtenaw Times.
BertSimonds, of Tecumseh, struck
for a day's hunt last Friday. He had it.
Yes, Drs. Catlin andTefft were called
and amputated his left hand just above
the wrist, all due to carelessly carrying
his gun while passing through the
brush.
On Saturday last four men casually
met on the corner of Huron and Main
streets, whose combined ages reached
307 years. They were Abram Shear,
of Plymouth, 76; Alexander i_err,Lodi,
82; Isaac Dunn, Ann Arbor, 75; Michael
j Cowan, Ann Arbor, 74.—Register.
j-brthville Record: One of our citizens, by accurate count, says that we
haveii, our village fifty widows and
but eight widowers. There are also
said to be eleven old hatchs and—old
maids.
Come over brother and we wiilmatch
pennies with you. We can count 56 of
the first in question.
The train dispatcher of of the New
London Northern railroad, extending
a distance of 121 miles, is a woman,—
Miss Lizzie E. D. Thayer. She is said
to be the only woman in the world
holding such a position, and from
seven in the morning until nine at
night she is responsible for the running of trains on the road.
Ray Cla.k,e!_ployed for G. W.Wood-
worth, of Medina, went aloft in the
barn with a lantern which he placed on
a loose board. Then he carefully
stepped on the board, which Hew up
and the lantern flew down into a sheep
manger, with the globe off. The promising fire, which started, was pelted
out with snow, by a small boy. Yet
some people say a boy isn't Avorth raising!—Adrian Press.
A student lamp exploded Saturday
evening in the residence of Mrs. Anna
G. Miller, on Packard street. A Mr.
Cook, one of the students rooming
there, was. attempting to fill it. His
face was slightly burned, the carpet
was injured, and considerable bedding
was ruined, in attempts to extinguish
the flame. Squawbuck oil.—Register.
Better say Squawbuck student. Anyone who doesn't know any more than
to try to fill a burning lamp ought to
be blown far enough to learn something.
Seventy foolish hens, belonging to J.
GanOung, of Macon, inspired by the
tariff on eggs, laid themselves out for
business the pastseason. Ganounghas
sold from these seventy hens,S90 worth
of eggs, and raised chicks enough
to take the places of those whose
extra efforts busted them up in business. Ganoung should learn this lesson: Tariff stimulates over-production
and then comes a crash of manufacturing firms,or else a shut down and reduction Of the output, to the cost of the
consumer.—.Adrian Press.

Pittsburgh, Nov
Editor of Observer:-
looking over the Observer recently,
it occurred to me that a few words from
Pittsburgh might he of interest to your
readers, so I send you the following
short account. A complete description
of Pittsburgh and her industries would
fill a large volume, so that I shall not
attempt anything of the kind,; but will
try to describe the view that can be
seen at night from the bluff, a few
blocks from wherel room. Pittsburgh
is very picturesque after the shades of
night have kindly shut out the view of
smoke begrimed buildings, and the
immense clouds of .smoke which continually hang over the city. Therefore
to get a favorable impression of the
"Smoky City," one should enter it at
night and go away before the next
morning, hut the view from the elevated portions at night would amply repay
a considerable journey.
It is such a view that I will attempt
to describe, though I feel that my pen
is wholly inadequate for the task. The
bluff where I room is on the north side
of the Monongahela River, and forms a
perpendicular wall of rock, 150 feet
high. Directly beneath is the B. & O.
road and Second avenue, which parallel the river, and a few rods from them
is the river itself. Across the river is
another bluff, but situated further back
thau this one, while between the river
and bluff, the bank for miles is lined
with factories, Which constitute the
greatest manufacturing district in
America.
At night these factories present a
grand pyrotechnic display, which must
be seen to he appreciated. Here you
Can see the stacks of puddling furnaces
belching forth great sheets of flame,
whose reflections can be seen dancing
up and down in the water, while the
sky takes on a lurid aspect. A little
further and you see a steel factory sending a shower of golden sparks high in
the air, while the interior of the building appears to be a solid mass of flame.
Through the open doors and windows
of some of the mills you can see the
white hot iron pass hack and forth between the rolls, and gradually lenghten
into long strips. Now you look into a
wire mill and see the heated wire writhing and twisting like a serpent as it is
run upon the reels.
But now a passing steamer with her
tow of coal.boats,glides down the river;
and shows the rays from her pp,\\*er|u.1
search light far over the water.. She
blows her fog horn whistle and the bass
notes echo and r_.-echo from the hills
until t,_ey are lost. By the way this
ooal business is immense. Each steamer takes in charge several coal boats
each of which would make up a good
sized freight house. During the recent
raise in. the river, the. value of the coal
which went down the river in a few
days, was $1,250,000.
But to return to the factories which
have been lost sight of during the passing of the steamer. Every now and
then you can hear a report like a cannon as a big chunk of heated iron is
put into the squeezer and has the slag
pressed out. At her factories there
are, glass facrories, nail factories, etc.,
whose lighted windows can be seen.
The back ground to the scene is furnished by the bluff, which is not so
steep as the one from which we are
observing the scene, but which rises to
a height of nearly 300 feet. The slope
of this bluff is built np in places, and
thickly studded with blue electric and
yellow gaslights, which adds greatly
to the grandeur. The lights seen at
the right are not coustellations, but
electric lights on the summit of Mt.
Washington. One person who gazed
on tho scene, described it briefly, thus:
"It looks like Hades with the lid taken
off."
As one considers the vast amount of
iron being put into a marketable shape,
it seems as though the dream of the
ancient alchemists, of converting the
baser metals into gold had been
realized. The Ivor) though, not changed
into that noble, metal itself is being
changed into _n equivalent for gold,
and the uses are certain1, many times
greater.
But in the day time? Well if you
stay until morning, you" will sometime
see the smoke and fog so thick that you
cant see more than a square away.
The sun rises like a dull copper colored
globe and if his rays are unsuccessful
in combating with the tog, we have one
of those dark days when one lies in bed
until he has to hustle around double
quick to make connections.
Sincerely yours,
j". H. RUCKMAN. *
