MISCELLANEOUS.
Talcing Things Easy.
Speaking of a recent trip to Cuba
Mr. Sigmund Eothschild.a big tobacco
dealer, said:
"Outside the center of Havana the
people, as a rule go stark naked. Indeed, I took dinner with the mayor of
a small interior town one day, and at
the table were his eight children, all of
'whom were as naked as the day they
were horn. 'The people eat Imt twice
a day, the first meal being from 11 to
12 and the last between 6 and 7 in the
evening. Trains on the railroads
never run at night. The longest road
is 160 miles'. The cars have no windows. In the first-class cars there are
cane seats; in the second-class wooden
seats. The first-class passage costs
just twice as much as the second, but
neither car has any window. While
riding into the interior one day I became hungry about 10 a. m.,and asked
the conductor as we stopped, at a station if I could not get something to
eat.
"'Why, certainly,' he said; <get ofE
and get somethiug and I'll wait for
you.'
"At the end of twenty minutes, having satisfied my hunger, I returned to
the car and asked the conductor if he
was ahead of time, or why he had allowed me nearly half an hour in which
to eat. He said he had no regular
time table; all he had to do was to go
up to the end of the line one day and
back the next. The arrival of the train
a half hour earlier or later was a matter of no account.
"The government lottery is one
great cause of the poverty of the people. A drawing is held every two
weeks, and it seems as though the entire earnings of the people go into the
tMng. From the time one lauds in
Havana till the moment he leaves he is
continually followed and importuned
to buy lottery tickets. The sellers outnumber the newsboys and like all
peddlers they constantly sing their
stock without a moment's let-up. The
social evil is everywhere glaringly
public. The saloons, which contain
nearly every form of intoxicating drink
yet invented, are wide open day and
night, Sundays and all (lays: but it
must be said to their credit that the
Cubans are a very moderate people. I
have hover seen one. of them intoxicated."—Detroit Free Press.

The doctor shook his head and looked
solemn. Doctors have a way of looking solemn when they -want "to impress
anything on a patient's mind. This
doctor had heard- his patient's story,
had examined his tongue, felt of his
pulse, nearly choked him by sticking a
silver spoon with a looking-glass on it
down his throat, and done various other
things that made, him nervous and
troubled.
"It's a serious matter," he said at
last.
"Ought I to go home and go to bed?"
asked the patient anxiously.
"No-o-o; 1 don't see that that is
necessary," returned the doctor slowly. "It won't hurt you to be on your
feet; in fact, that will bu rather bene*
iieial. You're a drinking man, jf I'm
not mistaken."
"Why, yes.' You wouldn't have me
istap -"
''JTot at all, not at all." interrupted
the doctor. "The shock to a man's
system when he chops off suddenly is
too great. I don't believe in it."
"I'm not much at grading down,"
said the patient.
"Not necessary." said the doctor.
"I don't see that liquor will do you any
serious harm if taken at the proper
time. Now, with your meals "
The patient shook his head.
"You might drink something," continued the doctor. "When the stomach,
is properly prepared a little——"
"Stop light there," interrupted the
patient, getting up to leave. "That
may do for millionaires, but I can't afford to oat often enough. Good day."

"I don't know that I ever quite estimated the value of my clothes until
one da j- lately," said the Wife of a
well-known citizen of New York, according to the Times of that city.
"We had been moving, and my husband had been taking his meals at a
neighboring restaurant—a first-class
one, by the way. I had not been with
him; but on the day of our worst confusion' I went there for luncheon. I
suppose I am what may be termed1 an
elderly little body, and on this day,
with an old long cloak thrown over
my 'moving' attire, I can fancy I was
not impressive. I was, however, civily
received and well served to the slight
luncheon I craved, aud when I arose
to go I left, as is my habit, a coin on
J the tray of the rather stately waiter
who brought me my change. 'Excuse
me, mem,' he remarked, returning it;
'we don't take anything from any
poor, person.' *]VIore. amused than indignant, I faced him.
"'Why do you think I am too poor
to give you sojne money?" I asked.
"The-fellow was nonplused at this
directness. 'Well,'lie said, stammering and hesitating, 'I may be mistaken,
hut, mem. yon have that appearance,
mejn.'
"I said no more, but left tire place,
and "I did not take up the coin.
"That liight I dressod"-myself with
care and went withvmyjhusbaud and a
friend who had-ebnie up with him -to
the restaurant fdr dinner. The same
waiter met us, looked at me, then at
my husband, whom he knew by sight
and name, puckered his- lips in a
quickly repressed whistle and—sent
another man to servo ns."

Two little bootblacks stood looking
wistfully in the show window of a
Clark street cigar store one afternoon.
They were typical street arabs, with
all the tough ways and bad habits of
their class. They wanted to smoke,
and their eyes were bent upon a box
of "cabbage-leaf" cheroots which were
labeled "two cents each."
"Bay.Chimmie," said the taller arab,
"I fink I'd injoy a bloody good smoke
just now."
"I'mwid yer," replied "Chimmie,"
smacking his lips in anticipation of a
cigar.
"But, yer see, de on'y trouble wid
me is dat I'm plumb broke."
"Is dat so? Well, I've got two'
cents."
"Give it ter me, den."
"What fur?"
"Why, ter buy wan ob dem air
sheroots, in course."
"But I wanter smoke, too."
"'N so do I."
"How kin the botli of us do it?" ■
"I'll tell yer wat tu do, Yev must-
give me de two cents an' we'll organize a stock company, Yer see you is
de capitalist, I'm de inventor; so yer
give dor coin ter me, den I buys" de
cigar and yer becomes a stockholder.
See?"
"Yas," responded "Chimmie," doubtfully. "But how does that ben'iit me
any? Yer has de cigar, doesn't yer?"
"Yas."
"An' yer smokes it, don't yer?"
"Yas, but don't yer see.'l'm de or-

"Why, you're de stockholder, ye*

He Tried to "Work the King for Millions,
but Got Badly Xeft.
Having obtained an audience of the
king an ingenious patriot pulled a paper from his pocket, saying: "May it
please your majesty, I have here a
formula for constructing armor-plating which no gun can pierce. If these
plates are adopted in the royal navy
our warships will be invulnerable and
therefore invincible. Here also are reports of your majesty's ministers, attesting the value of the. invention. I
will part with my right in it for one
million tumtums." After examining
the papers the king put them away
and promised him an order on the lord
high treasurer of the extortion department for a million tumtums. "And
here," said the ingenious patriot, pulling, another paper from another
pocket, "are the working plans of a
gun which I have invented which will
pierce that armor. Your majesty's
royal brother, the emperor of Booin-
bang,.is anxious, to purchase it, but
loyalty to your majesty's throne aud
person constrains me to offer it first to
your majesty. The price is 1.000,000
tumtums." Having received the promise of another check he thrust his hand
into still another pocket, remarkingr
"The price of the irresistible gun^would
have been much greater, your majesty,
but for the fact that its missiles can be
so effectively averted by my peculiar
method of treating the armor-plates
with a new " The king signed to
the great head factotum to approach.
"Search this man," he said, "aud re-
port how many pockets he has, "Forty-
three, sire," said the great head factotum, completing the-*1 scrutiny. "May
.it please your majesty." cried the ingenious patriot in terror. *;one of them

king: "then give him a check for 42,-
