Aluminum
We are reminded of the various uses
to which aluminum can be put by the
receipt of a neat lead pencil made of
that metal from the manufacturers of
the "Garland" stoves aud ranges.
The souvenir is three-cornered fitting the hands nicely and being as
light as harnwood and as strong as'
steel is a very acceptable article.
Aluminum was quite costly when
first discovered, but is gradually becoming cheaper and should it" ever become cheap enough there is no end of
the uses to which it could be put to
advantage; for bridges, armor plate
ships, etc., no better metal has been
discovered, and while most clay contains Aluminum, the principal cost is
in its extraction from the clay.
Experiment has proven that aluminum mixed with iron makes the latter
metal pour smoothly and prevents
blow holes, also benefits iron in many
ways. The Michigan Stove Company
having adopted the use of this metal
in the manufacture of their stoves it
places the Garland in the lead, S. H.*

In Egypt and Mesopotamia, Mr. W.
M. Flinders Petrie mentions, early art
Was far in advance of that in any other
lands, and appears to have been the
outcome of the first stable government known, the tranquil and prosperous condition even before the dawn
of history being favorable for progress
in architecture and the imitative arts.
Other lands borrowed from, these
sources, but Egyptian art—as old as,
or older thau, any other known—had
only its own antecedents to build upon,
and all traces of its origin and rise are
lost. Certain very early sculptures
have been assigned to the second and
third dynasties solely on account of the
style, but there is no absolute evidence
of the date of a single sculpture or
block before the first king of the fourth
dynasty (■ the predecessor of Cheops ),
lender Ayhom we find some of the most
perfect works ever executed. Re-
iH,ains of an earlier style are found in
the rock carvings of Upper Egypt, but
these rude prehistoric tracings have
no relation to the art of historical
times.
