The Worlds' Plants.
Hippocrates, 500-400 B. C. placed
the number of plants at 234; Theop-
hrartus, 310-225 B. C. at 500; Dioscori-
des 77 A. D. at 000; Pliny 23-79, at 800;
Casper Baunin, 1650 at 5,256; Linnaeus, 1771, at S,5.51; Steudel, 1824, at 70,
600. An Italian botanist,ot P. A. Sac-
cardo>estimates the number of species
known in 1S92 at about 174,000 divided
1()5,000 Phanerogams (flowering plants)
and 69,000 Cryptgams(flowing plants).
From certain data, Saccardo computes
further that the number of plants in
in existance in the world cannot be far
from 250,000 species of fungi and 135,000
of other groups, or a total 3S5,000 or
perhaps 400,000. The vast recent increase in the number known(the addition appearing to be 104,000 species since
1824) has resulted largely through researches with the microscope.

The concert and recital given at the
opera house on Friday evening attracted a fair-sized audience, notwithstanding the severe storm prevailing.
As noted in these .columns last week
the entertainment was given by Union
City young ladies who are studing music and elocution at Ypsilanti and Ann
Arbor, and their appearance in the
various numbers on the program
showed that each had made marked
improvement. The program as published was fully carried out with the
exception of a piano solo by Miss
Hattie Yesner who was unable to use
the instrument provided for the occasion. The vocal numbers by Miss Rena
Buell and Miss Laurene Corbin was
rendered in a most tasteful manner
and showed plainly that the young
ladies are studying hard to perfect
themselves and are succeeding most
happily. Miss Belle Maxon gave two
readings, "'The Blacksmith" and "The
Confessional," both of which callea
forth deseryed applause. Miss Maxon
has a pleasing stage appearance and a
fine voice, while she gives most suitable expression to the lines of her
readings.—Union City Ex.
