Crop Report for March
The wheat fields of Michigan were
fairly well, though lightly covered
with snow during the larger part of
February. A heavy snow storm occurred near the middle of the month,*
but the high winds prevailing leftthe
snow largely in drifts. The average
depth of snow in the lower peninsula,
on the loth was from four to five inches, and on the 2Sth, in the southern
and central counties, about one inch.
At this date, March 8, the snow is
all gone, and the frost in the southern
half of the state, all out of the ground.
The weather in February was almost
continuously cold. At Lansing the
mean daily temperature was ahove the
freezing point on only seven days.
The highest daily average was 37 degrees On the 7th, 39 on the Sth and 40
on the 9th and 2Sth- About 40 per cent
of the correspondents express a belief
that the wheat has been damaged, and
60 per cent that it has not.
The total'number of bushels of wheat
reported marketed by farmers ia February, is 1,085,127, and in the seven
months, August—February, 10,2S5,039
whieh is 245,884 bushels less than reported marketed in. the same months
last year. At 23 elevators and mills
from which reports have been received
there was no wheat marketed during
the month.
In condition live stock averages Irom
four to seven points ljeiow- a full average, comparison baing with stock in
good, healthy condition.

In a report to the Bureau of American .Republics qn goal and petroleum in

gtates that not less than forty newly
discovered petroleum springs—one '
capable of supplying a six inch pipe—
ooze forth in localities from one to
three miles from the shores of the gulf
of Uraba. The oil, as filtered hp fte

mountain range of Gigantones, where
was found what at first appeared t& he

P.u.t of tija orator at intervals brought
up small lumps of burnt carbonate of
lime and charred specimens of sulphur
and of ozokerite, or mineral was. The
oil and watev at the surface had a
temperature of 180 degrees. Mr. Car-
acristi's conclusion is that the petroleum "was doubtless produced by the
combination of carbonic aci'l gases
with sulphuric acid gases working on
the ozokerite and metallic bases of the
surrounding earth aud then combining
with hydrogen. In this condition it
came to the surface with the heated
water of the spring, or perhaps the
hot fumes were plunged into the
water and became condensed heating
the water. The oil then formed on the
surface of the water, being lighter,
and was held jn suspension un^ii sufficient steam was 'apaumi^r^tad in the
water tp e,ie.qt "it which explains the
Reason why' the oil rose to the surface
alternately with and before the water."

The Bilk of the great spider of Madagascar (Nephila Madagascariensis) is
stated by Dr. Karl Muller to be actually used by the natives for fastening
flowers on/sunshades and for other purposes. The thread has a golden color,
is very strong and elastic, and a single
female, at. tho breeding season, has
spun nearly two miles of it in 27 days.
The female spider may a-^ain a length
of six inches, allhoughthe mala scarcely exceeds an inch.
