Superstition of a mild order is rampart in our ranks this spring. The
occult sciences are claiming a great deal
of the fashionable butterfly's attention.
This I know, for palmistry,'graphology,
mesmerism and clairvoyance are vigorously discussed at every luncheon table. Tt is a sure sign of the predominating interests in feminine circles
when a question is argued over that
mid-day meal. The subjects lying
nearest our hearts are best considered
with a few chosen friends over the lobster cutlets and grouse croquettes.
Palmistry, «r chiromancy, as many of
us prefer to call it, is certainly le dernier cri. A dark-eyed, silken-voiced,
pseudo-Oriental gentleman, who tells a
picturesque story of his childhood in
Persia and among the gypsies wbo
stole him from his parents, has sprung
into great favor among us. He wears
a flowing, dark beard, a turban of gold-
colored silk, and on his hands the most
gorgeous turquoise rings, the sacred
stones of Persia. He receives his fair
interlocutors in a room hung witb
deep green curtains, and lighted by
candles of perfumed wax. Seated
cross-kneed on a heap of green silk
curtains he peeps into the soft pink
palms unfolded for his scrutiny, respectfully touching tbem with his own
gem-ringed, slendei', brown fingers,
and out of your left hand he reads the
past, out of your right, foretells the
future
I have heard wonderful things of
tbe Eastern gentleman's".powers of div-
inatiou. He told jane VanDuser,
three, days before her Yorkshire terrier, -Frou-frou, died, that a great calamity threatened her; and he has told
e.qually remarkable thiugs to other
people. It costs just five dollars to
have a reading of one's palms; nevertheless Monsier le Chiromancer's band-
some and expensive rooms on Fifth
Avenue are every morning filled to
overflowing.—From "Society Fads," in
Demorest's Magazine for April.
