Mines ofCoffin Wood.
In Upper Tonkin material for coffin
boards, of which many are exported,
is obtained from tree mines instead of
from ordinary living forests. The
trees are a kind of pine, very pitchy,
and very durable, and they are found
buried in a sandy soil at a depth of 7 to
25 feet. The trunks, some of them
more than 3 feet in diameter, are in
good preservation. Such evidence as
can be found, indicates that the tr ees
grew in a large forest, and were "buried
at no very remote time by an earthquake or other catastrophe.
PROGRAMME FOR THE GREAT JV-
JiY MEETING AT DETROIT.
It Should be tlie Grandest Conclave
of Trotter* and Pacers In tlie
Annals of tlie Turf.
With the finest equipped race course ln
America and a splendid list of entries for
the special events wnich ciosed during
the early spring, the prospects for the annual Blue ftibbon meeting of the Detroit
bright. Never was the outlook so cheerful as it is this year, and with everything
new and attractive the club believes the
enviable record of past triumphs -Trill
have its greatest addition in this year's
meeting.
The arranging of a programme for so
important a meeting is a matter -which occupies much more time than the average
spectator imagines as he watches the
sleek-limbed trotters rush down the broad
stretch. Records are gone over, successful programs of 1S93 reviewed and at last
the program -was ready for the conclave
which begins on July 16. A feature that
presents itself on the first reading is the
fact that there are .* to be six days of
racing this year instead of five, and for
the IS events the enormous sum of $70,000
is offered,, probably the greatest amout
in substantial purses ever given by an
association. The five purses and stakes
which have already closed have 141 entries and this time the club has made1 a
departure in its set purses. In the first
place $2,000 is offered for a free-for-all
team race and then there are pacers for
•2:12 trotters and also for pacers of the
same class. This is to give a chance to
horses whose owners do not feel lii-re en-
teringthem in company where the Direc-
tfims". AUxes. Fantasies or the Mascots.
