Frank E. Poster, a conductor, on the

.his train Monday the 20, and was badly
cut about the legs and body Irom which
he died soon after.
J". L. Skinner, proprietor of the Argus bindery, has received a brown seal
skin from New York city. This skin
is quite a rarity in this country, there
not being but four of them in New
York. Mr. Skinner has an order to
make an instrument case of it.—Democrat.
Hiram Lightlial], also, will be a candidate for sheriff. I have known Hi
many years. I became acquainted with
him in Saline, where he grew up to be
as tall as he is, probably the tallest man
in the cdiintv at collar and elbow. The
rascal does not live that could get
away from Hi, if once he got his grip
on him.—Washtenaw Times.

team last Wednesday ended in a row.
Duri ng the last half of the seventh inning with Michigan at the bat and one
man out the score a tie the TJ. of I. men
tried to have the game called on the
plea of darkness and the game broke

Mayor Pingree has offered "a good
pair of Pingree & Smith shoes to the
person giving the best definition of 'bi-
metalism'." So far, so good. Now,
Mr. Mayor, please offer another pair of
shoes for the best definition of the
catch phrase. "A honest dollar
whether of gold, silver or paper."
What really does the platform maker
mean by it?"—Times.
The "Experience" social at North-
ville, wherein the men earned the S $ S
they gave to the Methodist church,
was more fun than a pocketful of alligators. In the Becord's mention of the
funny experiences related we notice
the absence of Editor Neal's experience
—Milan Leader. Neal's experience
was in collecting a bill of Sl.OO against
the society for advertising the social.
Northville Becord.
A special agent of the Wabash railroad was in town Wednesday to investigate some private coal transactions
indulged in by August Butler -md J. N.
Vandewerker. These gentlemen were
accused of driving into the yards on
tho niglvt of February 2gnd aud getting
a load of coal from a car without p«i.
mission from anybody. They pleaded
guilty before Justice Marble and paid a
line of §2 each and costs.—Milan Leader.
Tho "close communion" school house
at- Milan, whose founders built it on the
idea that no more children were going
to be born than would just fill it, is so
badly crowded that the overflow of
youug'uns has been crammed into the
basement of the Presbyterian church,
as if iu proof of the doctrine of "infant
condemnation." Whatever may bo
thought of that doctrine, there is more
hope of the future for infants condemned than for those who kick on
building a new school house.—Monroe
Demccrat.
What, if anything is to be done this
year about the city building site? The
money is lying idle.—Ann Arbor Courier. Yes, the money and the lawyers,
aud tho railway track and newspaper
men are all lying and there seems to be
more lyingtothe square rod in Ann Arbor than any place in America outside
of Lansing. It is said figures won't lie
but several have been seen lying
around in the parks summer evenings.
Even the sheep have been lying down
there, about the wool clip.—Adrian
Press.
We have seen the famous duck's egg
which tho Hillsdale papfcr said was as
big as a goose. This is hardly true,
but it is no prevarication to say that
the egg is" enormous, and what is more
peculiar, it contains a perfect egg inside, with a hard shell. Both inner
and outer eggs have whites and yolks.
The duel; belongs toWm. Keith, of Jefferson and often lays the same kind of
eggs, well knowing that the Wilson
bill has placed the American duck on a
pnr with the pauper duck of Eurone,
and to maintain its superiority trie-
American must in some manner douhlt-
the product of its labor.—Hudson Post.

X Rays Made Useful
Prof. Roentgen's discovery of the X
rays was put to a practical use at the
University hospital on Wednesday afternoon when Dr. W. J. Herdman and
Prof. H, S. Carhart used them for the
purpose of locating the position of a
bullet in a man's foot. Stephen Schultz
of Eloise, was brought to the hospital
by Dr. J. Marker for treatment, having
a bullet in his foot as the result of a
shooting accident a few days since.
A senstive plate was placed beneath
his foot and the X rays brought into
requisition. The exposure was three
quarters of ah hour iu duration and the
bullet located near the joint on the first
metetorsal fcoue. The exposure was
not long enough to make plain the
imprint on the plate, but was sufficiently clear to locate the bullet. Another
attempt will be made-, and a longer time
will be given to the exposure. It is
thought that the swelling in the foot
prevented a successful exposure without a longer time being given to the
operation of the X rays. A lateral exposure will also be made in order to locate tho bullet transversely.-^Argus.
