him off a train some four years ago.
Stevens sued the company for §30,000

$7,500.—Register.
It is quietly hinted among those who
take something more than passing interest in county politics, that there is a
great big republican machine being
constructed at the county capitol, and
that Sheriff .fudson is the head push.
Judson is considerable of a political
hustler and one of the few who understands that the most effective work is
done at the caucus. If he has a machine stand from under when it moves.
—Dexter Leader.
"One of the most dreadful things is
to treat as a fact that young people
must first he sinners, then get converted by a revival and then finally get to
heaven. The better way is not to have
yoiing people sow wild oats. This is
absolutely possible and tremendously
desirous. You might point to a man
who has been wicked and then became
better and say 'What a good citizen he
has become,' but it only confirms me in
the opinion of what God would have
done if he had been given an earlier
chance."—Bev. Ryan, of Ypsilanti.
A swindle which evidently is new. is
being worked with great success in
many towns. A woman book agent appears in town and goes from bouse to
house, leaving books for examination.
Next day a man sails to see if the books
are wanted, and if they are not he
takes them away with him. A few
days later tin* woman agent appears
again, and on being told that the man
has taken away the book, weeps copiously, says the villian has been collecting her books all over town, pleads poverty and.so on, aud accepts the prof»
fered compensation.—Ex.
The failure of J. L. Hudson, the head
of a large mercantile syndie:\t" of Detroit—he asks of his creditors an extension of time to meet his obligations,
which is practically the same thing—is
another instance where a man bas
more irons in the fire than he can well
take care of. Still Mi. Hudson's failure should not be a surprise to close
watchers of the career of plunging
merchants. Statistics tell us that 95
per cent of those entering mercantile
business fail, and the percentage is
comparatively greater with large concerns than with the small. Slow and
sure is a safe rule.—Times.
Ko peddler does anything to help the
town. He gives nothing to churches,
schools or public enterprise. He pays
no taxes. He has nothing in common
with our people. He can swindle you
and often does—you can't help yourself
He has no store down the street to
which you can return goods that are not
up to sample. The itinerant merchant
has no reputation lo sustain. Re can
cheat with impunity. The home merchant is and does opposite. Hebearshis
share Of burdens of good government.
When a subscription is passed he is the
one approached. He builds a home
which enhances the value of all other
property. Re helped :pay for the
church in which you worship and the
school to .vhich you send your children
He cannot afford to misrepresent his
goods or swindle you. Self interest
alone will prevent that.—"Ex.

Marvelous Results.
Prom a letter written by Rev. J
Gunderman, of Diinondale, Mich.,we are
permitted to make this extract: "I have
no hesitation in recommending Dr. King's
New Discovery, as the results were most
marvelous in the case of iny wife. While
I was pastor of the Baptist church at Rives
Junction she was brought down with the
Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe. Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last
hours with little interruption and it seemed
as if she could not survive them. A friend
recommended Dr. King's New Discovery;
it was quick in its work and highly satisfactory in its results." Trial bottles free
