4 .QUEElf CASE.
Many years havo passed since we
■were sitting together, one May morning,
in a trelliscd arbor that overlooked Men-
tone and its western bay. My friend
was a handsome man of 40 years or po,
a landscape painter, who lacked fame, I
believe, only because he Jacked, the desire of fame and the spur- pf poverty because he cpnld, bo content with art for
art'sgake.
"'"If you like," Le said, "I will tell
yon a queer story about myself. I do
not swear you to secrecy, since love
laughs at the vows of confidants as well
as of lovers, but, as you are an alter ego,
you must agree to keep my story to
yourself till the actors; have left the
ecenc.   Besides^ 5 do aei suppose you

e secret to others."
I laughingly held out my hand in sign
of agreement, and he proceeded with his
tale.
"You must know," he began, "that
from my early childhood my mother's
brother steed to mo in place of parents-
Well to do, leisured, he was. mainly engrossed in scientific, p^rsuite. Grave, of
seyer^s ontjl dignified' demeanor, he had
-long-'cultivated the talent of silence. As
1 grew up he indulged me in my desire
of freedom and my love of art. He expressed himself as satisfied with my
choice of profession, supplied me amply
with requisite funds, approved my diligence, shook his head at most when I
could not show him many new studies.
There was only one subject which could
serve to break down his reserve, and
that was woman. Even then he seldom
ventured beyond witty^pigrams. The
cause of this corifirmed misogyny I may
be right in assigning to some youthful
love disappointment, but I have nothing
but conjecture to base upon. J was eager
to please this crabbed, austere uncle of
mine, whom I knew to be warm hearted
at the core, so unostentatiously helpful
was he to all whom he discovered to be
in need of assistance, but my eagerness
led me to the commission of an error. I
was constantly on the lookout for epigrams that should be new to him and
occasionally managed to fashion one
which I could produce as an impromptu.
I readily seized opportunities to pass
from epigram to declamation. In a word,
I overdid my part. And yet my uncle
seemed to quietly smile at my sallies
and often congratulated me on my revolt from petticoat government.
"Well, lean honestly say that for
long my art was my sole mistress, but
when I was reaching my thirtieth year
Don Cupid spread his wiles and captured
me.' I was making studies of Picardy
scenery and visiting at a pleasant chateau. My hostess' daughter one day informed me that the dear music mistress
and friend of her school days (an English lady, sho added) was to arrive in
the course cf the week. 'My fate, my
fate,' I murrnxured at her advent. It was
a case pf love at first sight; and, moreover-, tiio conp do*'|pudre was not onesided, I committed another error, much
graver than thejfirst. I told her of my
uncle's idiosyncrasy and, though she
was inesperieijced (she was but a year
or tWQ younger than I) and had not
Jacked, could not have lacked, unaccepted lovers, I won her reluctant consent
to a secret marriage. The case was simplified since she had none but distant
relatives, could readily resign her post,
cared not for society. And so we spent
a happy winter in the London in which
my uncle and I lived, but not together
—hidden, unsuspected. In the spring it-

"But with the spring came tho unexpected death of my uncle. Onemorning

which, had but little occupied my careless thoughts. Could I believe my ears?
Yet there was no possible doubt. His

and my quarterly subvention were to be.
paid. Otherwise the property was. to

tried, to think it all over. Why this total change in my uncle's views? Had

hand, sure that I was a confirmed celibate, did he wish by an unacceptable^

hypotheses were only hypotheses. I
walked hastily homeward to Margaret*
thinking the while how I should break
the news. Greeted with an anxious inquiry as to my paleness, I stammered
out the tidings in coherent fashion.
She, too, grew pale, and a long silence
followed. I could not read the meaning
of her face, for her eyes were averted.
I waited for her to speak, but in vain.
At last she walked away to the window
and turned her back to me. Gently I
raised her hand to kiss, but she drew it
away as though she were stung and
fronted me with flashing eyes and quivering lips.
" 'So this is what you have brought
mo to,' she cried, trembling with passion and anger. 'I trusted yon, and this
is tho reward cf my confidence.'
"And reproach followed reproach. I
am not sure that she did not even
charge me with knowing my uncle's intentions from the first* though how such
knowledge .and deceit were compatible
with my actions and the present situation were quite beyond my comprehen-
gien. But, then,, it was passion and not
logic that dictated her words. However,
I looked upon myself as a justly arraigned culprit and bowed my head to
the storm, hoping against hope for a revulsion in her feelings, for tears and
imploring hands. But when she had
made an end she stood calm, self possessed, scornful. I made a last effort. I
was eloquent, for my heart was full of
pride and pity and hope. I declared
myself ready to forego fortune; I should
work at mv art till I won success.   She
should be my nurse, my comforter. But
she only tossed hen head and aieered,
'Love in a cottage, I know what that
means.' My love then turned to bitterness, for then I knew that when women
sneer at romance theyforsake their very
womanliness, they harden their hearts.
She marked the change and pointed to
the door.
' ■'■ 'Not a word, sir. Go. Let me see
you no more. Go your way and I will
go mine. My friends will protect me
from you.'
"I found myself in ihe street, crushed,
dazed, stupid with conflicting emotions.
Was this the woman I had loved so
dearly—this the Margaret for whom I
was ready, if needs be, to embrace poverty? Poverty 1 The man who is poor
has no friends; on friendship let no
man count when fortune is adverse.
And the love that is stronger than death
* * * was evidently unable to face poverty. Margaret's love! Clearly she had
none or she would not have reproached
me, abandoned me at the very first trial.
I shook myself together, promised myself to forget her. She was not worthy
of remembrance; she was merely an adventuress, a bad woman.
"A year went by devoid of incident,
occupied with fitful exertion. Unliappy,
only too often absenlminded—that ia
to say, haunted—I yet made good progress in my art. Besides time and work
there were two other remedies for love
madness, I kept telling myself. But I
found that absence did but aggravate
the malady. That which is absent grows
vague,'- and that which is vague has the
charm of mystery. Absence idealized
Margaret, absence endeared her once
more to mc. I began to seek excuses for
her conduct, became anxious to pardon,
to convert blame into pity and from. (
pity pass to love. The sole other remedy was scorn—doubtless the strongest
remedy of all. I scorned her truly, but
intermittently. Too often my scorn
sought means for abdication. And thus
it canjo about that I began in my weakness to yearn for news from her. But
how could I forgive her? At last I determined to hear news of her, if not
from :=her. I should least commit myself
