The above term is a fitting one for
Monday's election. Our.village has
not ior many years experienced a harder
fought election than took place here
Monday, For vears past there has been
but little interest shown in this direction, and as a rule but one ticket was
found to be in existneee. Not so tbis
time, the caucuses were both well attended, and the fight commenced from
that hour and so continued until the
polls were closed on election day. There
was in the field two tickets, the regular
corporation and citizens. Geo. J. Nissly
was chosen to head both tickets, but
as the law prohibits a candidate running on two or more tickets for the
same office his uame was placed where
first chosen, and the second ticket
thereby left blank. E. A. Hauser for
trustee, was a like circumstance. The
fight seemed quite general, but for
trustees and clerk there w.is a special
'effort made to win, particularly so by
the citizens ticket, for the office of clerk.
The vote stood as follows, the first
name for each office being on the corporation ticket.

Adrian Press: Inst Saturday even
ing Truman Hunter, a Grand Rapids
man, was holding a sort of monetary
conference and among other things he
did was to toss to the cciltng a silvir
dollar and then catch it in his mouth.
He succeeded admirably, and the eari-
whcelfinally slid through his jaws and
went down his gullet. He tried to
"cough, up" his currency, but he
couldn't raise the cash. The trick was
out of sight, so Yr«is the dollar The
eagle didn't set well on his »t imr.ch,
however, and Hunteu hunted a, doutor,
p. d. q. The man of medicine was »
goldbug and said that inasmuch as it
was a 53 cent dollar he feared it would
not pass into general circulation. Hunter was greatly alarmed, and wanted
the doctor to open the stomach as there
was money in it. We a'lvise Hunter to
incorporate as a savings bank, and to
swallow a few quarters, dimes and nickels for change. The duutor thinks that
the dollar will, like the express between G and Iluiids and Chicago, go
through without change.

For many years the Cincinnati Enquirer nsed to print a solid editorial
page ancl employed an exclusive editorial
staff of six •writers, who wrote all their
■matter at night iu r^cr to keep abreast
of the telegraphic ut* s. One Fourth of
July evening as they assembled to begin
work somebody suggested a patriotic
drink in honor of the occasion. They
filed down to a restaurant near by, and,
as they lined up at tho bar, the door
opened and "Washington McLean, the
presiding genius of the paper, came in.
Mr. McLean did not drink often, but
when he did he drauk very hard. On
this occasion he was celebrating the
Fourth.
The result was that round after round
of whisky was ordered, and nobody
thonglit of the editorial page except one
writer (who tells the story in the Chicago Times-Herald), who went back to
the editorial rooms and sat down to
write an editorial. He never got beyond
the first sentence, "Yesterday was the
Fourth of July." The next day, when
the paper came out, on the editorial
page, there was just one line of editorial
matter. At the top were the words,
"Yesterday was the Fourth of July,"
and the rest of the page was filled with
news. The reading public believed that
the change was intentional, and Mr.
McLean received so many congratulatory letters commending his enterprise
in giving news preference over editorial
that he abolished the editorial page permanently.
The Vendisli Tongue In Germany..
Consul General de Kay writes for
The Century a paper on the Serbian
swamp Yeudland under the title of "An
Inland Venice." Mr. de Kay says:
These people speak German to the lord-
ings as we pass Vendish to our boatman,
but the Vendish is disappearing because,
for the sake of the army, its teaching is
discouraged. Throughout all this district, far over into Saxony, only a few
churches still offer sermons in tlie old
tongue. Yet if the Vendish tongue disappears the names of places will tell
the tale, even as such names in Brandenburg and Saxony still do. Dresden,
Leipsic, these are Vendish words—or
call them Slavic, with the broader term
that now means the race. And hereabout are Cbttbus, Vetschau, Muschen,
Brahmow, Babow, Dlugy, Baddush,
Leipe, Lehde, Byhleguhre, Straupitz
and Lubbeu. And the fliesses that wind
or shoot straight in and out of forest
and cleared fields retain Vendish names:
Mutuiza, Blushnitza, Bogazo, Zscha-
pigk, Polenzo, Grohlitzo and "Nabasatz.
Efforts have been made to give German
names to many of theni, but country
people everywhere are great holders to
precedent, and the people who stick so
tightly to their old costume are not going to give up their place names without
a strusrale.

Is there a tic&Iing in the
throat? Do you cough a great
deal, especially when lying
down? Are you hoarse at
times? Does nearly every cold
you take settle in your throat?
These "throat coughs" are
very deceptive. Don't neglect
them. Troches, or cough
syrups won't touch the spot.
You must take remedies that
will enrich the blood, tone up
the nerves; and heal the inflamed membranes.
SCOTT'S EMULSION of
Cod-liver Oil with Hypophos-
phites contains such remedies.
It has wonderful nourishing
and healing power. The cause
of the cough is removed? the
whole system is given new life

from threatening lung trouble
is swept away.
