Harnessing the "Ether.
Tesla once made a remark which was
fnll of the spirit of future progress in
the matter of lighting. "It is of not
little interest," he said, "to contemplate that we have a possible way of
producing — by other than chemical
means—a veritable flame which would
give light and heat without any material being consumed, without any chemical process taking place, and to accomplish this we only need to perfect methods of producing enormous frequencies
and potentials."
These words of Mr. Tesla contain a
suggestion the full meaning of which
has lately been moro thoroughly understood. To produce something from nothing has ever been a great human problem
not always solvable. Here is a scientist pointing out a scientific" way of accomplishing the feat. The hidden meaning of the remark is not hard to discern.
His words would seem to intimate that
we have been employing exceedingly
crude methods of light production; that
in the laboratory of nature means and
material exist which may be procured
and nsed for the mere asking; that our
proper course would te ..to first see how
light is produced in nature, and then
as far as possible to go and do likewise.
The harnessing of the ether means the
solution of many great secrets of the universe, the utilization of natural light,
the subtle transmission of speech
through miles of space, and the greatest triumph science has yet known.—
Theodore Waters in Exchange.
Bagpipes In Ife-iv Guinea.
Mr. Angus MacKenzie, an old miner
well known as a prospector in northern
Queensland, Australia, recently arrived
from New Guinea with a large quantity of gold and thinks there is a great
advantage in being a Scotchman. When
he left for New Guinea, he took hag-
pipes with him, and to their agency he-
attributes much of the luck which *?el\
to his lot while prospecting for gold.
He said that the natives would do anything for him, providing he played the
pipes to them at night. They looked af.--
ter him and bis. eft'ects and acted as, pointers without Qjjher. pay than the music-
of tho "pipes- They took; him over new
(jpiftntry and showed him where heavy
gold could be obtained. It is possible
that intending prospectors in New Guinea might lay out their money to worse
advantage than in the purchase of bagpipes. In any case, Mr. MacKenzie regards the pipes as the best and moat
judicious investment he ever made.—

THE MAKING OF POISON.
A Factory Where the Most Deadly Drugs
Are Prepared.
In London isa s'trange establishment,
behind a wilderness of warehouses and
tumbledown tenements, in a remote
suburb. Its massive gates are locked and
jealously guarded. A visitor must not
only be careful where he steps-and refrain from touching, he must also
breathe with great caution. One of the
terrible poisons manufactured here is
pure anhydrous acid, a drug seldom
seen outside a chemical laboratory. This
is the deadliest of all known poisons.
The discoverer was stricken dead from
inhaling its fumes, from 3 to 5 per
cent of this chemical added to 95 or 97
parts of water makes prussio acid. This
diluted poison canses instant death,
even when taken in minute quantities.
Next to anhydrous acid, the worst
poison they make is cyanide of potassium. Last. year they turned out over
1,000 tons of it. Five grains being a
fatal dose, the annual output would be
sufficient to kill 2,500,000 people. In
the workroom, where men are gathered
around a witch's caldron containing
over a hundred weight of molten cyanide, a strange picture is presented,
l'he seething mass of white hot liquid
poison, with the lambent play of the
furnace fires, the phantom faces of the
workmen, enveloped in an uncanny
looking glass mask, peering into the
heart of the dreadful mixture through
the thick atmosphere, are a terrible
sight. In another room, where are tons
of the finished product, looking like
crystalized sugar, "good enough to
eat," one man is never allowed alone.
"For some inexplicable reason it exercises a strange fascination for the men
who inhale its fumes. They are haunted by a desire to eat it. But, knowing
that satisfying tho craving means instant death, most, but not all, are able
to resist it. Aside from this fascination
its manufacture is not considered unhealthy. The same cannot be said of
corrosive sublimate. Its fumes are deadly.—Chicago Inter Ocean.
His lionus.
They were just closing np the real estate deal, aud tho man who always
wanted something thrown in to make a
good bargain appeared to hesitate.
' 'What'll vou throw in?" -
"What'lllwhat?"
"What'll you throw in as a sort of
i-onris!"
"Oh, yes, yes, of course!" said the
ueal estate man. "How stupid of mel
Why, the fact is, in our lino of business
we arc not exactly in the habit of giving
prizes, but, in this case, just to make it
binding, I don't mind throwing in the
back taxes."
"Now you're talking business!" exclaimed the would be purchaser. "It always pays for a man to stick out for his
rights."
It was only after the transfer was
made that he discovered the back taxes
were payable by and not to the owner.
