Current Topics.
There is no effort for the improvement of the people that has taken a
more prominent form than that showing itself in the establishment and
maintenance of public libraries. The
multiplicity of hooks, their low cost
and the natural love there is of reading
have led to the popularizing of public libraries until few villages of any
respectable size are without collections
of books to which the people have free
access. Men of wealth have devoted
their money to the establishment of
large libraries and two of the very best
of these in this country are in Chicago, the gifts of public-spirited citizens
Who left their wealth for that purpose.
States generally have provided for
the support of public libraries, although the average state legislator has
about as much use for books as a duck
has for an umbrella. Of all the states
Minnesota has exhibited the best judgment in its laws relating to libraries.
There is an annual appropriation made
or ?10,000 to encourage the establishment of public school collections of
books. The law provides that ?20 shall
be given the first year and $10 annually
thereafter to any school that raises an
equal cr a greater sum for a library,
the stimulus of which donation has
resulted in a large excess of individual
giving over the amount donated by the
state. This plan has heen in operation
for the last ten years and since it began" over 1,800 public school libraries
have been established, having an average of sixty-five volumes each, making
a total of more than 117,000 volumes.
This number of books, large as it is,
is not so significant of public interest
in the plan as the fact that the growth
of each library is continuous, while the
number of them is steadily increasing.
The plan pursued in the state is not
to purchase books at random or ac-
eording to the whims of any one individual but to purchase a year's quota of
"cooks devoted to one special subject,
so that the result is the formation of a
library especially adapted to reference
purposes, which supplements the educational work of the school proper.
While popular "works of romance and
travels are not omitted the body of
the books may be considered as supplementary to the text books and the
work of the teachers.
It Is not probable that any equivalent sum appropriated for any other
purpose brings the state of Minnesota
so large a return as* the §10,000 donated
to the purchase of. books for the public school libraries and the example
of that state might profitably be followed by any other, especially at the
west, where large cities are infre-
auent and technical libraries are rare.

of GxJ-Iiver Oil with Hypophos-
phites, can be taken as easily in
summer as in winter. Unlike the
plain oil it is palatahle, and the
hypophosphites that are in it aid in
digestion and at the same time tone
up the system.
For sickly, delicate children, and
for those whose longs are affected,
it is a mistake to leave it off in the
summer months. The dose may be
reduced if necessary.
We recommend the small size
especially for summer use, and for
children, where a smaller dose is required. It should be kept in a cool
place after it is once opened.

METHODS
Cures the Effect of LaG-rippe
Through the Nerves—A Medicine that "Never Fails,
Dr.WHEELER'S NERVE VITALIZER
The debilitating effeGt of La, Grippe has
probadly killed more people than any other
class of disease. Our country is to-day full
of such physical wrecks. La Grippe leaves
its deadly poison in the system to cut short
and torture life. Like many other forms of
nervous debility science has been unable to
cope witli, the evil -until the introduction of
D,r. "'jV'lieeler's' 2"fervet Vitalizer; which
Strengthens every nerve in the body and enables them to drive out their tormentors.
$frs, VanNess Jordon, Ferry, Mich., was
cured with one bottle. She writes:
"I kept growing worse after I recovered
from La Grippe until I was prostrated. My
heart was most seriously effected, but the
trouble seemed to be all over me; for some
reason the doctors medicine made me worse;
finally I sent for a bottle of your Vitalizer.
The first dose quieted me; it soon stopped
the heart palpatation, and I slept well; after
using one bottle I was able to do my house
work again. I recommended it to Mrs.
Lemuel Williams, who was prostrated from
taking care of children through a fever.
She had siuking spells and at times was out
of her mind. Your Nerve Vitalizer had a
wonderful effect, curing her in a very short
time. I have great faith in it and never intend to be without it in my house." Signed
Mrs. VanNess Jordon.
