The long-expected current events
contest of the civil government class
came off at the High School last Thursday. Miss Callle Smith received first
honors, Miss Blanch Mead, second and
Miss Eva Schairer, third. First prize
is a subscription to the "Pathfi nder",
second and third prizes are books.
These examination papers, we understand, were most exeellent as may be
seen from the parts given below, and
were so uniformly accurate that the
judges had to examine them very
closely in order to assign the places.
The following also presented papers
that are worthy of honorable mention:
Luther Briggs, Campbell Leith, Minnie
"Warner, Arthur Davenport, Fannie
Friis, Frances Traver.
Current events are matters of interest to all and we therefore g've the
first prize paper entire. Next week
we- will run parts of the other two papers.
No. i. Candidates lor Mayor of Greater
New York ?
Van Wyck, Seth Low, Henry George
and Gen. Tracy. Van Wyck represented the Tammany Democracy; Seth Low
•the Citizens Union; Henry George, the
Jeffersonian Democracy; and Gen.
Tracy the Republican machine.
No. 2. The '*Wilhelm Der Grosse'"?
The Wilhelm der Grosse is the large
new ship. Tt was built in Europe and
crossed the Atlantic to New York this
fall. It made the run across the ocean
ina few hours over five days, which
was the quickest time ever made by a
vessel crossing the Atlantic. Last week
il returned to Southampton, England,
and broke its own. record by several
minutes.
No. 3. What of Justice Field?
Justice Field, noted as being the oldest member o' the Supreme bench, has
resigned his position. He has been
justice for thirty-four years and is now
in his seventy-fourth yeat. His home
is in California where he expects to
spend the rest of his life quietly. He
will still receive a salary of §10,000 for
the remainder of his life.
No. 4. Who were Thomas Piatt and Richard Croker?
Thomas Piatt was the controller of
the Republican machine in New York
City. Richard Crocker has been the
controller of the Tammauy Democracy
in that city for many years. He spends
most of his time in Eigland and is
greatly under the influence of the
Priuce of Wales
No 5 Mistake of the Rspublicans in the
New York campaign?
The Republican parly in Greater
N. Y. made a great mistake iu nominating Gen. Trucy instead of endorsing
Seth Low, because Low was wanted for
inavor by tho bast ci tiz 'ns and by the
working classes of tbe city and if he
had received ihe votes of the Republicans (which votes went to Tracy) he
would have been elected by a plurality
of about 20,000 votes.
No. 6. Who was Evangelina Cisneros?
Senorila Evangelina Cisnero-* is the
niece of the- President nf Cuba. She
wascsipiured by the Spanish two years
ago. since which time she has been in
jail at Havana, Cuba- She escaped from
prison this fall by the assistance of
Karl Decher, a journalist on a New
York paper, who smuggled, a note to
her that'he "coiilc" ai$ fier.ij she would

Senor Canovas was the Pi em'er of Spain
assassinated August "* by an Italian
anarchist named Golli. Ho had held
this position for many years. The
vacancy has been filled by Sagasta.
No. 8. Who have been the Spanish Cap-
tain-Gsnefals in CubaV
The Spanish Captain-generals iu
Cuba have been, Campos, Weyler and
Blanco respectively. Weyler was notorious for his .extreme cruelty and
tbe number of people he held in prison
No. 9. What two great fires recently?
There have been two great fires this
fall one in Detroit and che other io
London. Several blocks were burned
in Detroit and also th.s Whitney opera
house. London papers say the lire
there was tbe greatest known since
1660
No, 10. Who is Dr. Nansen?
Dr. Nansen ts the great Artie explorer who returned this fall. He had
noted how the wreckage of the ship
Vengeance floated over the pole s,o he
went to Siberia and set sail from there,
letting his vessel, the Framt fioat with
the current toward the pole. As a result he came the nearest any one yet
has of reaching the North Pole.
No. 11. What can you say of Geo, M.
Pullman'*
George M. Pullman, the multi-
millionare, died at his home in Chicago
October 20. He made his great fortune in the Pullman cars which he
invented. In his will he left oyer a
million to various charitable institutions, and most of the balance to his
daughters. To his sous who are rather
wild he left mortgages and bonds, so
thej' will have a yearly income of only
a few thousand.
No. 12. "What is the Reichsrath and how
noted of late?
The Reichsrath is the name of the
Austrian Legislature. There are two
nationalities iu Austria the Hungarians and the Germans, and both
wish to have their own language spoken and to have the records of the
Reichsrath written in their own language. This caused a dispute in the
Reichsrath and finally Ihe quarrel became so violent that troops had to be
called in. Several members were
stabbed and it is the most disgraceful
affair in Austrian history. Thetroutle
'will probably continue.
No. 13. The la-gest telescope?
The largest telescope In the world is
the Yerhes Telescope a- Geneva Wis.
It was presented to the Chicago University by Dr. Yerhes. The, lens were
made by a Mr. Clark.
No. 14. Result of the election in Ohio
and other states?
The result of the tlectiou in Ohio
was a victory for the republicans. Mr.
Buchner was elected Governor. Mark
Hanna is running for Senator of Ohio,
but although the state went republican
still there is some doubt of his being
elected. Some republican members have
threatened they will not vote for him.
He conducted the republican affairs in
the presidential campaign last year and
was appointed Senator for the past year
to fill a vacancy. Pennsylvania also
went republica" Mr. Swallow being
elected Governor. The republicans
were victorious ir. a majority of the
states where elections were held this
fall.
No. 15. Make a statement about the following men.
General Gomez is the commander of
the Cub:in forces.
President Andrews of Brown University, resigned his position this
summer at the request of the Board because he was iu favor of free silver,
while they favored gold. But the
faculty petitioned the Board for his
recall so he decided to retain his 'position,
Charles A. Dana, editor of the New
York Sun, died at his home on October
19. He attended Harvard College, but
did not graduate b^i-mise of trouble
with his eyes. He participated in the
Brook Farm experiment and was assistant Secretary of War under Lincoln
After the civil war was over he became
editor of tho Nv;w York s>uii and has
donemuch to build up lhat paper.
Mr. Andree lia-* gone in a baloon to
try and find the north pole. Nothing
his been heard of him since he started
and it is not known whether he is
alive or dead.

word to tbe Commander of the forts
there if the,y were not evacuated in
three hours he would fire upon them.
At the end of that time six hundred
German soldiers landed and marched
to the fort which the Chinese had eva-
onate.d, and raised their colors. Germany will probably keep a fleet there
to protect her missionaries. i

The Competitor?
The Iowa is a new battleship built
in America. It is 860 feet long, 70 feet
wide,44 feet deep und has 48 guns. It
is the greatest ship of its kind afloat.
The Competitor io an American filibustering ship which was captured last
year by the Spanish, The crew which
was taken prisoners by the Spanish,
were released from prison by Gen.
Blanco and have just returned to New
York in the ship Saratoga.

has been recalled.
James B. Angell, president of the
University of Michigan,is our Minister
to Turkey. He has been in Turkey
nearly a year.

died in London July lg,' ISO?. Al
though she began to write when a child
she was thirty when her first poems
were edited.
Wm. Maybury *was elected Mayor^ of
Detroit.
The Klondyke is the newly discoyerel
gold fields in Alaska, discovered by
George Cormac. Thousands of excited
gold seekers have thronged there in
spite of the many hardships. It is very
Cold there and large fires are built at
night to thaw out what dirt and gold
that is to be dug next day.
The Fram is the Ship in which Nansen made his Artie explorations. It is
the strongest ship ever made and is so
constructed that it will rise above the
ice instead of being crushed when it
comes in contact with an iceberg.
