The "Pupejv Mori-Is Used,
Mr, Mpprls W9S B8 advocate for thick
paper, but be bad long before found
out that machine-made paper pf wood
pulp and clay wag useless for permanent results, to say nothing of the uninteresting quality of its surface. The
latter failing is a factor hy no means
unimportant in the beauty of a book.
Much of our shiny, calendered paper is,
besides, trying to the eyes. He was
forced to resort to the plain, honest
way of the old-time papermakers. Unbleached linen rags were used and
molds whose wires were not woven
with absolute mechanical accuracy,
thus obtaining a sort of variety in the
surface.
This paper was made expressly for
him by Mr. Batchelor at Little Chart,
near Ashford, and "resembles the paper of the early printers in all its hest
qualities." Three water marks were
designed by him for paper of different
sizes—"the apple, the daisy and the
perch with a spray in its mouth; each
of these devices being accompanied by
the initials W. M."—Pratt Institute

Jealous of His Bad Wxitlns.
This reminds us of the dry humor
that runs- through Judge Andrews'
soul. While the court was trying the

thp Minneapolis lawyer yrhp represent:

a few paragraphs which he desired the
court to read to the jury as a part of
the instructions. Judge Andrews
seemed to he trying to read the lawyer's scribbling for quite awhile, and
finally he said in 841 soberness, addressing his remarks to the lawyer in
question: "I'm sorry, sir, that you
came here at all:" "Why," said the
limb of the law. "What's the matter

Prof, ■folin A. Brashear' presented
the Pittsburg Amateur PhqtQgr'ipliers'
society recently with a photograph
whick is of a great deal of value and
surrounded by much interesting history. It was the first photograph of
the human face, the picture being the
first accurate reproduction of a daguerreotype by John W. Draper, of New
York, about 1840, the exposure being
from five to seven minutes and the picture being that of Miss Catherine Dorothy Draper. The original negative
was presented by Mr. Draper to Sir
John Herschel and in 1892 it was returned to Mrs. Ann Draper, from whom
Prof. Brashear secured it and presented
it to the society. The picture represents a young woman, dressed in the
fashion of 1840, a great poke bonnet
filled in about the face with flowers
being worn, a shawl covering the
shoulders and the hands placidly
folded.—Pittsburg Commercial-Gazette.
