CENTRAL AMERICAN BEAUTIES.
Stories of Blossoms Almost Too Good
to Be True.
"The brilliance of the coloring of the
Central American orchids is heautifu*.
beyond description. I found the trees
and plants of Costa Hica exceedingly
prolific. The most surprising of all
were the immense flowering trees in
the jungles and forests, resembling our
grand old oaks, covered with delicate
pink blossoms like azaleas, often as
many as thirty blossoms in a bunch,
and hundreds of them on a tree, says a
lady recently returned from Costa R'ci
to a New Tork Tribune reporter. "One
of the most beautiful pictures of Costa
Hica which I recall just now is a plantation of coffee, with its snow-white
blossoms, fenced-in by old posts, out
of which were growing shoots from
ten to fifteen feet high, crowned with
bWlliant red blossoms. The flowers of
the coffee trees are fine, and grow in
little bunches at the section of the
leaves and on these slender branches
as many as twenty of thirty bunches
may be seen, running down their entire length, in fact, covering the trees,
which stand from eight to ten feet high.
This feathery mass of blossoms soon
becomes coffee beans of a bright red
or brown color at first. Another thing
which Interested me greatly was the
blossom .ot the banana tree, which
stands out in wonderful contrast with
the coffee blossom. It is of immense
Bize, pink and* delicate green in color,
turning into a brilliant red and brown
before falling and leaving the young
banana in its place. "While the wild
flowers of Costa Rica grow in prodigal
profusion and are rare and beautiful
to northern eyes, the cultivated flowers surpass in beauty anything ever
imagined and they blossom the year
round. I saw a white climbing rose
with hundreds of buds and full roses,
from which my hostess told me she ha4
cut roses every morning for eighteen
months. The stands in the markets
are covered with flowers, and one can
buy a bunch of orchids there for five
cents, each one of which would cost
over $1 here. For ten cents one can
buy all the flowers one can carry."

MISS MATTHEWS, PRINCESS.
Queen Victoria's Granddaughter Wants
to Earn Her living.
Princess "Victoria, the only unmarried daughter of the prince and princess of Wales, is a woman looking foi
some useful mission that a royal girl
may fill without disgracing her family,
says the Philadelphia Ledger. She
does not wish to marry, though divers
good offers have been made for her
hand, since of the three sisters she is
far and away the most clever and companionable, and a number of eligible
young German and Swedish princ>5s
and grand dukes have really wished to
have her to wife. But the Princess
Victoria has not yet found a husband
to her mind, and, to her mother's great
dismay, she cherishes an ardent ambition to be a genuine wage-earner. Two
years ago she fitted herself for nursing
and announced her intention of entering a London hospital. There were
Eerious family conclaves and not until
sent to interview her very decided
grandmamma on the question did the
young princess relinquish the plan. Inheriting a decided artistic taste from
her mother, this royal spinster is now
