' METHOD IN HIS MADNESS.
Florist Controlled tbo Flowers Be Sold
for. Young Women.
"No, sir," said the florist, "we! have
no jonquils or buttercups, as you call
them. *We have some fine violets,
though, and they are cheap for today."
"See here," replied the prospective purchaser^ according to the Memphis Scim-
itar^ "I havo been everywhere and received that same aiiswer. I will buy
your violets if you will tell me why
florists won't handle jonquils." "Oh,
we will give them out to a chance customer that comes in here some time, or
to a regular customer who has to have
them for a special puepose, but we do
not want to sell them to the fellows
who come in here after flowers for their
best girls. This is the reason: The
buttercups will be sent to the girl and
she will probably wear them one day,
when she goes uptown. Then, when
she goes home, if she thinks anything
at all of the fellow, or even-if she does
not, she will put those flowers in water
to see how long they will keep. The
pesky jonquils will be as fresh when
the young man calls the e~ening after
as when he sent the flowers to her and
he will say something in regard to the
fact. Til send you some more to replace those when they wi'her,' he says.
'I think they are so symbolic of the
early spring,' she answers. He murmurs something else and she decides to
keep those jonquils to find how long
they will remain fresh. They continue
to be fresh for two or three days, and
then, whether she cares for the fellow
or not, she becomes interested in finding out when they will wither. They
keep and keep any time from a week
to ten days and as a result the young
man does not buy any more flowers
for that time. When the girl goes uptown she pins one of those jonquils
ou and says to her friends, 'Yes, I just
wear that one because I have kept it
for days,' as. the case may be. The
violets will not stand an hour or two's
steady wearing and the young fellow
must come back for a new supply.
That is why we sell violets in preference to jonquils."

street in Naples at aU hours or tne
day. The Neapolitan goat generally
resembles the ordinary red cow in
color, although black and gray goats
are common, as well as red and white
spotted ones that remind me in color of
an Irish setter. These goats not only
amble through the principal streets of
Naples in the most unrestrained fashion, but they nestle in small (or large,
as the case may be) groups on the
sidewalk against the. buildings 'and
hang about the entrances to the big
houses in which their owners live,
waiting to be milked. I am told it is
also customary for them to ascend four
or five long flights of the great stone
staircases that are built into the ordinary Neapolitan tenement dwelling
houses, where they also present themselves to their owners for the purpose
above stated. All? this diversified street
traffic **iresents an anomalous scene,
especially when in its midst one sees
many handsome carriages and beautiful horses, as well turned out and
groomed as those in Hyde Park itself.
That is the ludicrous part of the scene
—the contrast presented by the splendid thoroughbreds and smart carriages,
the shaky cabs and their wretched,
starved-looking horses, the fat donkeys
and ugly mules, the pretty little ponies
so frequently driven in pairs to a
small yellow phaeton, the ill-assorted
pairs of all sorts of animals, the cow
driven by a herdsman, the goats wandering along by themselves—and the
beggars overstepping them all in number and noise.

Tlie streets of Naples present more
curious sights, probably, than do those
of any other civilized city in western
"Europe. Most curious of all, perhaps,
is the street traffic, with ill-assorted
animals and ludicrously matched teams
attached to most grotesaue vehicles
and vans, says a writer in the Boston
Herald. Recently in the "Via di Roma,
which is the main shopping thoroughfare in Naples, i encountered a sort
of dray or wagon drawn hy three animals abreast. A' small horse was in
the center, with a mule on one side
and a cow on the other. Not an ox,
mind you, but a cow. * * Oxen are as
