Wisconsin Denizens Fall to Recognize
the Once Familiar Animal,
From the Milwaukee Sentinel: Some
of the Sentinel's esteemed contemporaries are permitting themselves to become considerably exercised over a recent hunting experience of a certain
Mr. Rucks, who, it seems, one day was
prowling about the aboriginal and
aboracious fastnesses of his "Washington county farm whea a strange-looking quadruped, with an elongated body,
ditto snout and short stubby legs, came
within the-range of his vision and rifle
and promptly was maple to suffer the

hole, according as you view his sanctum from the standpoint of a seadog or
of a landlubber. Wherefore, jeering
jests are elaborated at the expense of
Editor Lange by the Sheboygan Telegram, Eau Claire Leader and other
badgering contemporaries. For it
transpires that ultimately the game
was identified by an ornery English
wayfarer as the traditional "badger"
to a likeness with whose habits of hibernation the early pioneers of Wisconsin owed their sobriquet and thus
the state its too, whieh nickname if
ever appropriate has long since lost its

therefore the occasion of our semi-centennial celebration propitious to the
adoption by popular nomination and
acclamation of a new and characteristically appropriate sobriquet? One
typical of the Wisconsin of today and
promising so to remain for another
half century, say. Upon this subject
the Sentinel invites suggestions and

In our advertising columns will be
found an announcement of Ex-Senator
John J. Ingalls' forthcoming book entitled'* America's War For Humanity."
Canvassing agents will find in it a book
of remarkable interest, and certainly
of extraordinary salability. The history of the war is told in picture and
story, and in a way that always characterizes the brilliant pen of Senator
Ingalls. In narrating the incidents of
this war he finds grand scope for his
superb descriptive and analytical powers. The theme is worthy of the author
and the author is worthy of the theme.

New York is ascribing to the bicycle's
influence the practice of riding-astride,
but Chicago horseback riders of both
sexes have become so accustomed to
the "rational" method that it Co longer excites comment when seen on the
boulevaids on pleasant days. Last tall
a number of New York's smart set—
ladies of modest and retiring habits,
as well as of high social position—undertook to introduce the custom at the"
cross-country hunts on Long1'1 Island

rather, a divided skirt, with the bloomers underneath. When d'si-eountcd the
suit had the appearance of an ordinary
skirt and coat, and when astride of the
horse the skirt concealed all except the
tips of the boots. It was far more
modest in appearance than the old-
fashioned tight-fitting riding hahit,
and certainly more artistic. The leaders in the crusade enjoyed their crosscountry rides -sp, -thoroughly thaC'they

■before most of New Yoik's population
is astir, one can see young and middle
aged ladies of wealthy families riding
astride in Central or Riverside park,
accompanied either by their male relatives or a solitary footman. They
take their exercise at this unseemly
hour because of the publicity that their
riding man-fashion would create when
the park is full of people. But all of
this secrecy will not be observed much
longer. An attempt will be made to
introduce the custom so generally that
by another season no more will he
thought of riding a horse astride than
of a woman riding a bicycle. The La-
flies' club of Horseback Riders has
been organized in New York to popularize riding astride. From a hygienic
point of view the new method of riding
ts of great advantage to equestriennes.
