HOOD'S Sarsaparilla has over and
over again proved by its cures,
when all other preparations failed, that
it is the One True BLOO D Purifier,.
The iadies of the Congregational
church at Ypsilanti are making quite
extended preparations for the - Christmas pale which lasts two- days this
week.
The Dexter Leader has in its possession an iron "corn husking machine"
that has something of a history- It is
the property of Christian Fritz and
has been used by him every since 1856.
It is made of horseshoe iron and he
brought it from Illinois when he came
to Michigan.
The University burned about SO tons
of coal a day last week. There are one
coal handler and two fireman for each
shift at the engine house. The burning of this amount means, therefore,
the handling of 15 tons per day by each
handler and seven and one-half tons for
each fireman. These jobs are evident -
ly no snaps at this time of year.—Argus—D.
- Charles Sauer returned yesterday
from Menominee where he has been
spending several days. On reaehin g
home he found a letter from the secretary of the state board of education asking him to submit pians for a projected
new building for the State Normal
school at Mt Pleasant.—Argus—Dem.
Chas is one of our Saline boys, and
like many others of the same stock,
has-made his mark in the world.
It is believed that the Senate will
readily ratify the treaty of peace when
presented to it by the president. The
opposition journals and the "yellow"
papers generally are hinting all manner of sensational things'with reference
to the Senate's reception of the treaty,
but the President's advisers do not
seem to be alarmed "at the predicted
defeat. The press and the people
generally are firm in their support of
the administration and look with disfavor upon all movements looking toward the belittling of our victory.—
Courier. ^
Upwards of 70 persons assembled at
the hospitable home of our townsman,
M. D. Wallace, last Friday evening,
and about 60 spent the time at cards.
Light refreshments were served and
all seemed to be happy. Mr. Wallace
leaves this week for Milwaukeee, to
visit his children and'old time friends
in the cream city. His aged mother
will be left in good hands as Mr, and
Mrs, Wm. Uphaus have decided to remain and take charge of the** house
and farm this winter.—Enterprise
In speaking of the- future of Sheriff
Judson, the Argus—Dem, says: Is
*'Bil" thinking of the wardenship of
the state prison'-1 Bless your dear soul,
where did you get such a notion 'i Such
thoughts be far from him. He said so
this morning. "Why that's the last
thing I am thinking of," was his comment. "Now, you know, don't you,
that the term of J. Hert Smith of Hillsdale, doesn't expire, until Feb. 15 and
the governor would not have control of
that board until then. Will the board
make a new change after he has appointed a new member? How can I
tell?
Work of the Ann Arbor Road
Frankfort, Mich., December 14.—
Special.)—The Ann Arbor Railway
Company is .making prejiartaions to
handle more freight across Lake Michigan than ever, during this winter's
navigation. Haying purchased more
heavy road engines and more tracks in
the yard, the company expects to
handle with quicker dispatch more
freight than any one line across Lake
Michigan. The new Ann Arbor car
ferry No 3, which' handles package
freight with loaded cars at the same
time, and the steamer Alice Stafford
of the Soo line, which has been newly
rebuilt and larger for this winter route
when more business demands, will
handle all the packag ef reight for this
road from Manitowoc, Kewaunee,, Wis,
and Manistique, Mich. Now that navigation is practically closed, package
freight will soon move across lake
Michigan. The Ann Arbor car ferries
Nos. 1.2, and 3 expect to run through
Green Bay all winter. Tbe large tug
Crosby, of Peshtigo, Wis., will attend
to the boats at this.harbor this" winter.

•A clergymen preached a rather Ion
sermon from the text, "Thou an
weighed in the balance and found
wanting." After the congregation listened about an hour, some began to
get weary and went out; others soon
followed, greatly to the annoyance ot
the minister. Another person started,
whereupon the preacher stopped hia
sermon and said: "That is right, gentlemen; as fast as you are weigkea,
pass out!" He continued his sermon
some time after that, hut no one disturbed him by leaving.—London Judy.
