DREYFUS IN CAPTIVITY.
A ltfjport That He Is Not Badly Treated
on Devil's Island.
The Paris correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph writes: According to a report circulated here, and
coming from a German source, it would
appear that Dreyfus is not so badly
oft In EievlKs Island as was supposed.
The story is told that a Dutch vessel
slowly passing near the ex-captain's
place of captivity was boarded by some
French marines or penitentiary officials *w1m> asked for the Ipan of the
ship's cook for a few hours. The reason given was that the man who did
the cooking in the convict settlement
had broken his arm and. wag in the
hospital. The captain of the Dutch
steamer accordingly sent a sailor named Welnheber to Devil's Island to. act
as cook for a while. . During his very
brief sojourn on the island Welnheber
is said to have seen Dreyfus and to
have had an opportunity of observing
how the "ex-captain -was treated. Ac-
herding to the Dutchman, the prisoner
rose every morning between six and
seven o'clock, had a cup of chocolate,
a bath, and, if the weather permitted,
a walk. While taking the bath the
prisoner's wrists were tied around with
a cord, one end of which was held hy
a warder. This was to prevent any attempt to commit suicide. After the
bath the ex-captaln breakfasted on
bread and butter, an egg and a bottle
of beer. This meal being over, he read
books on military topics and wrote letters and bis memoirs, the epistles being always sent to his friends through
the military governor of Cayenne.
Dreyfus is also allowed to play cards
with his warders, but npt fpr mpney,
as he is npt allpwed to retain possession of a sou. At two p'clpck In the
afternoon the prisoner receives bread,
roast meat, vegetables, dessert and-
beer. At six in the evening he has supper, cold ham, with more bread and
beer. Weinheher being allpwed tP
draw near the prispner, Dreyfus shook
him by the hand and said: "Greet the
outside world for me when you return
to id." The Dutchman" further states
that the ex-captaln is not in an iron
cage, but has the whole range of the
Island, under the eyes of the warders.
If this narrative be true, the friends of
Dreyfus will have some cpnsplatipn in
knowing that he enjpys a little free-
dpm, and that he is well fed.

Things to Know.
It does not appear to be generally
knpwu that, in case pf a sting by a
wasp, if that wasp pr any pther wasp
He at pnee caught, the sting cut off,
and the body ef the wasp crushed and
rubbed ever the place stung, it affprds
npt pnly instantaneous relief and free-
dpm from pain but any swelling is at
once reduced. With bees, as they always leave their sting in the wound,
it is necessary to do nothing more than
crush and rub the bee en the wound
This is a certain remedy in every case.
A Parisian doctor has discovered that
a solution of one part of picric acid to
75 parts of water will surely and speedily -cure the most terrible burns and
scalds, and recommends that barrels ol
the solution he kept in foundries, etc.
in which workmen could be immersed
The pain is instantly removed, sores
and blisters prevented and a cure completed in four or live days.
Recovering: French Treasure.
For many years a local legend in
Frankfort-on-the-Main had it that a
big treasure of gold lay buried in the
Main river just beneath the big old
bridge. On moonlight nights, it was
said, one could see the gold glisten
in the water. "Recently the fact became patent that there must be a
foundation for this old tradition, for
skippers steadily fished up gold pieces
from the river bed in the vicinity
named. At last the Prussian government made a thorough investigation,
and within a week one treasure at"
least was brought to light—about 1,500
French geld coins of the times from
Louis XIV. to Louis XVIII. as well as
of the first republic. This is evidently
part of a French war treasure lost or
buried there during the troublesome
Napoleonic period.
A Narrow Escape
Thaukful words written by Mrs. AdahE.
Hart, of Groton. S. D. "Was taken with a
bad cold which settled on my lungs; cough

tion. Four Doctors gave me up, saying I
could live but a short time. I gave my self
up £o my Saviour, determined if I could
not stay with my friends on earth, I would
meet the absent ones above. My husbaud
was advised to get Dr. King's New Dis-
covrey for Consumption, Coughs aud Colds
I gave it a. trial, took in all eight bottles.
It has cured me, and I thank God I am
saved and now a well and healthy woman."

Mamma Could Swim.
There was nc little excitement In the
vicinity pf the Pacific Mail wharf
shcrtly after 1 p. m. yesterday. Two
native children, aged 5 and 6 respectively, jumped intc a bpat up near the
king's beat hpuse, and noticing that
it was tied, started to have a good
time. The jumping about of the children loosened the line, and the boat,
aided by the wind, started put the
channel. The children were ppwerless.
The mother appeared pn the walk
leading from the king's boat house to
shpre, and immediately jumped into
the water. She caught the boat off the
marine railway, kissed the children,
then spanked them, and rowed the
boat back to position.—Pacific Commercial Advertiser.
