FREAKISH FEATS.
Foolhardy Wagers by Foolisli Individuals.
Perhaps the most foolhardy feat or.
record was that of a French cabinetmaker named Paul Parmentier, -who,
while drinking in a wine shop in the
Hue Keller, in Paris, a short time ago.
offered to lay a wager of five francs
that he would jump out of a fourth
floor window without hurting himself.
Treating the offer as a joke his comrades accepted the het, hut were horrified when Parmentier rushed into the
road, and, climhing up four flights ol
.- stairs to his own room, threw himselt
into the street. He was picked up with
his left leg "broken and seriously injured internally. A short time ago the
circus at Bolton was the scene of an
exciting incident, a local barber named
Settle, having undertaken to shave a
man in the lions' den. The building
was crowded to excess, and the bar-
- ber, attired in all 'his tonsorial habili-
■ ments, completed his task, amid the
most profound excitement. Another
extraordinary feat was that performed
. by a Vienna shoemaker not long ago.
This individual undertook from a given calf to manufacture a pair of boots
within twenty-four hours of the animal's death. Early in the morning of
the appointed day a calf was killed in
the presence of numerous witnesses.
The skin was at the tannery shortly afterwards; it was properly tanned, and
turned over to the spirited shoemaker,
that very evening, and next morning it
appeared in the shape of a pair of
boots, which were worn by the man
who owned the calf that had carried tht?
skin the day before. Reverting to
feats of a different nature, we may
mention the performance of Signor
Grava/ni, a Milanese pianist, who
made a bet that he would play for
twenty-five consecutive hours, with cn-
iy an interval of half an hour for refreshments, He *wgn triumphantly, for
'he went straight on without taking -the
stipulated period of rest. Starting at
eleven at night, he kept on until midnight of the following day, playing
■ works by "Wagner, comic opera, ballet
music and grand opera.
From time to time he was fed hy a
friend, who poured down his throat
coffee, tea and eggs, beaten up with
wine. A jury of eight musicians took
it in turns to watch the performance.
So far from being exhausted at the end
of these extraordinary proceedings Signor Gravagni offered to make a further
bet that he would" keep on for another
six hours, but there were no takers.

Io view of'the coming fill elections
and the bets that- are liable to be made
on the results, the following taken from
an exchange is very appropriate: Tf
you bet a big bunch of money and Ipse
it on any election, don't play tbe baby
act and go to law about it, for the supreme court has just decided a case
Wherin it saj'S that halting on election
is not betting on a game of
chance, for an election is not any
such thing in the eyes of the law. One
who loses on a game of chance may
sue and recover from the person with
whom he gambles, but elections do not
eome in that class.
The Democratic state committee has
decided to fight tho state campaign on
state issue and the congressional campaign on national issue of which tbe
financial issue promises to he the most
prominent. Tbis is right. There is
more connection between the government at Ijansing and the government
at Washington than there is between
the local issues which confront the
people of Boston and the questions of
home government which the people of
San Francisco are called upon to settle . The legislature and stato government should be chosen with special
reference to tbe fitness of tbe individuals offering their services in that
capacity to give the people oi the state
