THE WAR AS AN EDUCATOR.
- The educational influence qf the war
is apparent in various directions. The
most obvious is the stimulus which it
has given, to the study of geography.
Atlases, large and small, are among
the best selling books, and war maps
in tbe newspapers are eagerly studied.
How many persons, not fresh from
geographical study, could have indicated the position of the island of Martinique with relation to the other West
Indies, or who could have told, when
informed that the Spanish squadron
was at Curacao, just where that Dutch
island lies? Who knew where Jupiter
Inlet Is, before the battleship Oregon
galled in there?
Public interest in history, international law and European politics has
been greatly quickened, and average
men and women find themselves discussing grave questions of national
rights and responsibilities in which,
six months ago, they would have felt
no concern.
We are finding gut some minqr faet§
of intfiresi Pqr instance, '?Mqrrg" cas,-.
tie at Haya-ga used to be spoken of as**
if "'MPrro" were a proper same, and it
was? usually spelt "Moro" castle, at
that; but as circumstances have led
us to think more about the Spanish
forts in Cuba and Porto Eico, we have
discovered a "Morro" fort at San Juan
and at Santiago de Cuba, and have
learned that the term means simply
a fort upon a promontory.
It may not be too much to hope that
we shall all learn to spell Puerto Rico
properly. The form "Porto Eico" is a
mongrel combination of Italian and
Spanish, which is without excuse. The
first half of the name is identical with
^"Puerto!: ih Puerto Principe, which no

Preaching. *""
I think that the emphasis of preaching is laid with increasing power^upon
the vital and spiritual elements of
religion. We have already gained Within our borders the battle, which may
be still waging in some other quarters, for needed liberty of thought and
speech. Biblical criticism and all scientific investigations have room and
free play among us. The conviction
grows and deepens among us that all
knowledge and all truth are to minister to life. According to our Christian faith God is both light and love.
—Rev. Newman Smith.

It is perhaps in pronunciation that
we have most to learn. We come upon
strange-looking proper names in the
current news; we must pronounce them
somehow, and most of us wish to pronounce them right. After all, it is very
simple, after a half-hour's study of the
peculiarities of Spanish consonants.

A Singular Fact.
Thousands of People have Dyspepsia
and Don't Know it.
Dyspepsia is the cause of about nine-
tenths of all'diseases. yet.in most cases
the wrong thing is treated and the true
cause overlooked, simply because dys-
pepsia'produces symptoms resembling
many other diseases. A weak and diseased stomach causes heart trouble,
kidney disease, weak lungs, and nervous debility. The nervous system

PTRANgg TRAOEBY,
Purled to the ""Veil Where He Met
Death.
Speaking of strange and sad occurrences, none could be more remarkable than the death and burial of
Charles Carter, a well-known farmer
residing near Russeil, says the Kansas
City Journal. He was cleaning out an
old well, when the quicksand suddenly
caved, in on him, leaving only hishea,"!,
and chest exposed.* ' When Ihe alarm
was given hundreds ot p.e.'opjji'ijssem^
bled; and' went""j§roically te work te
save their neighbor. It was found
that nothing could be done toward removing the sand about Carter's body,
so a parallel well was dug and a tunnel run from it intg thj alii Vfell, b^|
even then, the tp'ijy epultl net be to*
moved, so elesely was it grasped by
the sands. It was found that a rope
attached below Carter's arm would pull
the body into parts without withdrawing its covered portion, and that
method had to be abandoned. Carter was conscious and talked with his
rescuers, and at the end of fifty-eight
hours he died. By this time an enormous crowd had gathered and all sorts
of plans.were suggested for recqyerin'i|
the body, but finally it was detefgiineq
to make tlie' -jsjell the "de^d man's tomb,
and it wag filled up after religious services had been held upon the brink. The
well was forty-eight feet deep, and
perhaps no other Kansan ever found
quite so strange a burial place.

Antarctic Bergs,
The first antarctic ice passed in several years by vessels bound to the
United States is reported by Capt.
Paude of the Norwegian ship Prince
Edward, which arrived at this port recently from Carrizal, Chile, with m^*ft-
ganese ore. Between Cape Horn and
the Falkland islands the bergs appeared in the distance like mountain
peaks and for a time it was thought
that land was near. The error was not
discovered until the huge masses be7
gan to roll with the sea, shQwiflg tljat
they were ice which had bcokeg**si,*ij*Fay
from some lap 4i»tant and perhaps unknown shore. The antarctic ice is different from the arctic drift, being
harder and of a deeper blue in color. It
is slower in melting. Both bergs seen i
by Capt. Paude were in the direct path j
of vessels rounding Cape Horn.—Phil- j
