Standing by His I'rlenda.
Uncle Billy Hood was sued on a
promissory note before 'Squire Hooper
in the Pine Stump district, and confessed judgment, but to the great; astonishment of the attorney -who brought the
suit the- court dismissed the case and
entered a judgment against the plaintiff for costs. "How on earth can your
honor proceed in such a manner?" asked the astonished lawyer, "when all of
the evidence and the acknowledgment
of the defendant are on the other side?''
"Wal, you see," said the court, "Uncle Billy hax alius been mighty good
about send in' me backbone an' spare
ribs at hog-killin' time, an' I can't afford to go back on him, you know."—

Is It Best To Tell Your
Troubles?
Joseph McGibney, a night watch oE
Kalamazoo, has had trouble lor oig ht
years. Now that he is practically freed
therefrom , he proposes to reveal the
facts to his neighbors. Meetiug a
prominent druggist last week, whose
. name we withold for the present, he
said,"I have had dyspepsia and nerve
troubles for)eighb years, and have tried
maoy'preparatioDS advertised for their
cure, with no satisfaction. Recently I
procured a package of Drake's Dyspepsia pure and Nerve Restorer, have had
it only two weeks and am thankful that
my affliction is a thing of the past.
Good, sound sleep is something I have
not had for some time previous to my
using treatment. I can safely recommend, it to any person afflicted with
stomach or nerve troubles." There is
Only one place in Saline where you can
get this preparation; G. P. TJnter-
kircher, the leading druggist^. This
is the only preparation for stomach
and nerve troubles that is sold strictly
upon its merits. A package will convince the most skeptical. A book on
stomach and nerve troubles, their symptoms and their cures, given free for
the asking at the above store.
DYSPEPSIA is the cause of-untold suffering. By taking Hood's
Sarsaparilla the digestive organs are
toned and dyspepsia IS CURED.

FIND BIRTH PLACE OF BUDDHA.
Interesting Archaeological Discoveries
Recently Blade by Vincent Smith.
Vincent Smith, a learned antiquary
of Bengal, has recently made some interesting discoveries of Buddhist remains in India, says the London correspondent of the New York Sun. The
first of these is the home of Gautama
Buddha, who lived about 500 B. C. The
ruins of this ancient city of Kapila-
vastu are in Nepaul territory; they are,
so far as yet known, entirely of brick,
and are so covered with jungle and so
extensive that years will be required
for their thorough exploration. Since
410 B. C. the city has been in ruins and
unoccupied, and excavations are now
bringing to light buildings more ancient than any previously known in India. More interesting even than Kap-
ilavastu is the discovery of the Lum-
bini Garden, the traditional birthplace
of Gautama* The sacred spot is marked by a pillar erected in the third century B. V. by the Emperor Asoka. The
inscription on this pillar is still perfect. It stands on the western edge of
a mound of ruins about a hundred
yards in diameter, and on the south
side of this mound is the tank in which
the child's mother bathed after his
birth. Another discovery, which was
made in a stupa, or brick tumulus,
close to the British frontier^ is that of
relics of Buddha himself. These consist only of fragments of bone, which
were deposited in a wooden vessel that
stood on the bottom of a massive coffer, more than four feet long and two
feet deep, cut out of a solid block of
fine sandstone. This coffer was buried
under eighteen feet of masonry, composed of huge bricks, each sixteen inches long. The wooden vessel was decayed, and with it was an exquisitely
finished bowl of rock crystal, the largest yet discovered in Inula, and also
five small vases of soapstone. All
these vessels were partially filled, in
honor of the relics, with a marvelous
collection of gold stars, pearls, topazes,
beryls, and other jewels, and of various
objects delicately wrought in crystal,
agate, and other substances. An inscription on the lid of one of the soap-
stone vases declares the relics to be
those of Buddha himself, and the characters in which this inscription is written are substantially the same as those
of the Asoka inscriptions, and indicate
that the tumulus was constructed between 300 and 250 B. C. Buddha spent
many years preaching and teaching
at the city of Sravasti, and a large
number of his sayings and parables
purport to have been uttered there.
The site of the famous city was long
sought in vain. Mr. Smith now states
with confidence that it Is in the jungles
of the Nepaul Terai, about eleven miles
from the station of Nepalganj roaiJT on
the Bengal and Northwestern railway.
Its remains, like those of Kapilavastu,
are buried in jungle, but they seem of
great extent, and are found precisely
where the Chinese pilgrims of the early
centuries of the Christian era stated
that Sravasti was.

SAILOR TAILORS.
They Slake Money Working for Their
Shipmates.
New York Sun: The skill displayed
by the sailors on board our naval vessels in making their own clothes, even
to their caps, surprises the average
landsman, who had a vague idea thai
these things were supplied hy government tailors. Ready-made uniforms
are supplied to the recruits; but as soon
as the men get their sea legs and
begin to have some pride in their appearance they get their uniforms made
by the tailors in the crew, and much
better fitting clothes they are. It is a
■".-ell recognized fact that no tailor
ashore can compete with these sailer
tailors in making hlue-jacket suits,
with his ditty box and his small hand
sewing machine" a ship's tailor, after
his regular duties are over, can ma'-e
extra money to spend ashore. He
charges about $5 for making a sailor
suit with all its trimmings, and tV
man who employs him draws his clot:
from the ship's stores. For makin'r a
cap, including the fancy embroider"
about the top and band, the charge i?s
?1.5S, and a well-set-up tar wouldn't'
think of wearing a cap bought ashore
if he had money and pride. The capmakers in a ship's crew are experts in
various styles of embroidering. Thesr
tailors and capmakers aboard ship arr
classed usually with thrifty men, and
the amount of money they can make
and save in a three years' cruise sometimes amounts to $1,500 or more, and
there is a tradition in the navy that a
quartermaster was paid off from the
cruiser San Francisco several years ago
after a three years' cruise with 53.000.

Big Pieces of String.
The largest cable -of modern times
is, perhaps, the manila hawser which
was used to tow the drydock to Havana. It is twenty-three inches in circumference, but it is by no means
the largest that ever has been made,
although it has the reputation of
breaking the record. There are at
least two others of a greater circumference, says the Boston Traveler, but
both older. One of these had a circumference of twenty-three inches,
and was used for'the purpose of anchoring the ship North Carolina in the
navy yard at Brooklyn, while the other
was a twenty-four-inch hawser, which
was used as a sheet-anchor cable on
the Tennessee when she was stationed
in the Mediterranean in the sixties.
Such an enormous Tope was naturally
found to be unwieldly, a fact which
was abundantly demonstrated when
the vessel encountered a storm in the
Bay of Naples. "When the Tennessee
returned to her native home in America the hawser was sent to the oakum
mills and made into oakum.
