HUMAN HAIR PILLOWS.
Busy
Sensations arid an Earthquake.
The Sensation of an earthquake at
sea is startling. The ship is shocked
from, stem to stern and the first impression is that she has struck a rock.
On a railway train in motion the sensation is that the wheels have run
over a fair-sized stone, for It is a severe jolt. In the lofty modern office
building,the affrighted tenant fancies
the edifice is swaying to and fro over
the periphery of ahout half a block,
when in reality the oscillation is confined to a few inches, except in severe
cases. The effect produced on the
human system is never twice the same.
The man who smiles at the shock today becomes terrified on some other
occasion. He never knows beforehand
how he is going to take it. Women are
always more alarmed than men and
many of them have a feeling of seasickness. I never yet saw a woman
otherwise than frightened out of her
wits during an earthquake, whereas in
a disaster at sea some of them are not
infrequently cooler than the sterner
sex. But there is something about an
earthquake especially demoralizing to
women.—Lippincott's.

Pitt—org Girl's Tad. Keeps Men
Patronizing Barbers,
In most parts of the United States,
and in most countries, the men lose
hair after marriage, but in Pittsburg,
Pa., the conditions are reversed, for
it is the custom in that part of the
world to contribute a pint of yoiir
locks to your sweetheart for pillow-making purposes. Moreover,
your contribution finds 'its way
to a varied assortment of other,
locks from other men's heads, and the
whole collection goes to make up a
nice, fat slumber -puff for your sweetheart's whole family to snore over.
The fad was started by an inventive
young woman in the east end, who had
for a lover a poet whose curly locks became something of a nuisance to her.
She finally conceived the idea of having him get a hair-cut and dedicate
the curls to her for pillow uses. With
much reluctance and many pangs of
regret the callow youth hied himself
to his barber. Notwithstanding tne
fact that the poet had a vigorous
growth of bangs, t_e entire supply was
hardly sufficient to meet the immediate demands. Therefore another acquaintance was called into play, and
yet another, until in a short time a
well-developed pillow was completed
and a silken case decorated by graceful needlework became one of the parlor ornaments. In an alarmingly short
time human hair pillows became the
fad in Pittsburg. There was a regular jam in the leading barber shops,
and an upward tendency to hair tonic
stock. Football players are in great
favor in Pittsburg this season. But
few of them last long," for usually a
Delilah catches the youth napping and
he is shorn of his locks. Truly the
Pittsburg girl is a novelty itself.—New
York Journal.
NEWEST WORD IN FLANDERS.
Euphonious Term by Which Horseless
Carriage Is Known.
From the New York Herald: Some
new words have necessarily "been added
to the English-language since the introduction of the horseless carriage,
and the vocabularies of other tongues
have also naturally been similarly enriched in all countries where such carriages have become popular. With
few exceptions ail these words are
technical and their true significance Is
only understood by the electrician and
the machinist. The members of the
Flemish academy of Anvers recently
determined to frame a word which
would he readily intelligible to all who
understood the language of Flanders
and who had ever seen a horseless
carriage, and the result was that after
much deep thought they framed the
following word: "Sneipaardelooszon-
derspoorwegpetrolrijtuig." This euphonious word signifies "a carriage
which is worked by means of petroleum, which travels fast, which has no
horses and which is not run on rails."
That is, from one point of view, a fine
example of multum in parvo, hut it
may be questioned whether one extraordinarily long word is preferable to
half a dozen short words. The Flemish people, however, think differently,
and the academicians of Anvers have
been highly complimented by them on
their linguistic skill as seen in this
unique word
