Raisins Kelons by Bottle.
The green watermelon is usually able
to hold its own against the small boy,
but it seems that it is unable to compete with science. The scientific watermelon grower now fattens his melons
for market with just as good results
as the man gets who raises live stock.
Tour up-to-date melonist operates oa
the stem of the melon and introduces
a cotton fuse into it. After the stem
heals the fuse is passed through a cork
and into a bottle filled with water
which has heen sweetened with sugar.
It is said that one melon, will drink a
pint of sweetened water a day, and
that, melons brought up on the bottle
weigh ia the neighborhood of seventy-
five pounds and have a sweetness of
disposition that cannot be tasted in
any untrained melon.—Sterling (Mo.)

Only One Girl for Him.
It was rumored in the city of Providence a while ago that the pastor of
the Center church was about to marry
a certain Miss S., a beautiful society
young woman, but belonging to the
Episcopal church. The good people of
the pastor's church talked it over and
came to the conclusion that he might
ehoose more wisely. Finally it was
left to the elders to wait upon and
expostulate with him. They visited
him and expressed to him the feelings
of the church. The pastor listened
patiently till they were through, and
then laconically, remarked: "Gentlemen, there is more than one Congregational church in the world; there is
but one Miss S."

START OF FORTUNES.
Perhaps it is luck after all. Most ot
the noted fortunes, of this country to*
day had their beginnings in small incidents. Everybody knows the story of
Jay Gould and his mousetrap.—ich he
invented while he was a clerk in a
country store. The profits from this
and from a lucky purchase of land laid
the foundation of the fortune of $60,-
000,000 he left.
John Jacob Astor, the founder of the
Astor family, had some cheap musical
instruments sent him from abroad and
he sold them at a very good profit.
"With the $1,000 he made he* bought %
plot' — ground on the Bowery, and it
increased in value till to-day it represents millions of dollars. <
Fifty years ago Andrew Carnfegie
was working lor 21 cents a day as a,
bobbin boy in a pill, Then he got f?
a week., as a telegraph boy in . itts*-
burg and thought he was rolling \n
luxury, Tr — y je CQunts his wealth
by mil.it.ns,
John D. Rockefeller as he followed a
plow in his boyhood days had one am-
bitiop, and that was to join a circus.
Later in life he got $10 a month as a
clerk. To-day he makes more money
a minute than he earned then in a
whole year.
John W. Mackay won gold with a
pick; the first Vanderbilt ran a barge,
and a dozen other New York families
started in just as humble a manner.
Sir Thomas Lipton, the man whose
yacht is to race with the American
boat for the cup, was the son of poor
parents, and began life as a cabin boy
on a coasting boat.

Winter Preparation
Weather conditions the past two weeks have made people think that In
acquiring Cuba, Porto Rico, and the Phillip_.es we also acquired a tropical
climate. The weather bureau is, however, now engaged in dissipating such
ideas, and it will soon be apparent to all that the ''old fashioned, winter" has
not forgotten us. You'll find that summer attire does not harmonize with chilly
November blast, and you'll want things—lots of thorn—and we will be most
happy tosupply them, for a consideration, which we assure you shall be-»
very modest one. _
