The Rev. Irl R Hicks Almanac.
There is no comparison between
Iormer editions, and this splendid Al-
manat. for 1900, now ready. Printed
in beautiful colors, on much finer pappr,
its 196 pages .art packed with-invaluable informal iun on storms, astronomy,
and meteorology. It is illustrated
with-nearly 20Q finest halftones and
other engravings. Thit- superb book
would sell anywhere for fifty cents, but
it costs only 25 cents a copy, and every
Subscriber to Rev. Irl R. Hicks' now
famous paper, V. ORD AND WoKKS, at
SI.00 a year, receives this elegant Almanac as a premium. WORD AND
WoHKS is a reQQ^nized leader among
the best family and scientific journals,
while noij]|ng of its kind can compare
with the Hicks Almanac. One dollar
a year is a nominal price for such unique
and useful publications. Professor
Hicks has justly, and of necessity, withdrawn his storm and weather forecasts
from all free almanacs, having generously given his time and labor free for
nearly twenty years. WOKD AND

Bermas Gin Graduates,
In. Germany the number of girl graduates is Increasing in a remarkable
fashion. Three years ago the ten great
schools had on their books 177 female
students. At the end of 1S07 the total
had "risen to 347, every university except Munster contributing to the roll
of female graduates. At the beginning of this year the total gain had
again increased to 400. Philology and
physiology are the favorite subjects of
the fair stucjentg.
Explosive Force of liquid Air,
It is asserted that liquid air has
twenty times the explosive force of
dynamite. During experiments at
Vienna, in the firing of cannon, the
liquid air was exploded by an electric
spark, and the results were extremely
satisfactory. No heat was developed
in the" guns, and the range of the
projectiles was much increased.
An Aged Wedding Party.
A short wbile since at Vienna, Karl
Becker, at the age of 92, was married
to Fraulein Rosa Stutzel, a mature
spinster of 90. The bridesmaids were
three friends of the bride, aged respectively S2, S6 and 93, while the principal supporter of the bridegroom was
his brother, a veteran of 94.—Tid-Bits.

QUEER LOCKET.
And the Peculiar History That 3Iado It
a l_eepsalce.
New Orleans Times-Democrat: "Yes,
this is rather a peculiar locket and I
got it in rather a peculiar manger,"
said a cotton buyer of this eity when
somebody rggtarked the quaint little
trinket a ttaeheg to his watch, chain.
T£e locket was of gold, and ai. ordinary fiye-cenj; piece \?as set is the lid,
gurrounged by a circle Qf colored
.tones. Tbe effeet was odd and not
inartistic. '"The story is briefly this,'-
continued tho speaker. "About three
years ago I was on a street car in
Chicago, when one of the passengers,
a very nice looking young lady, discovered that she had no money in her
purse. The conductor was disposed to
be ugly about it, and, of course, I insisted on paying the fare, giving the
girl one of my cards at her very earnest request. Over a year elapsed, and
the incident had entirely faded from
my mind, when one day I was walking
along St. Charles street and was hailed
by a lady from a cab. She nrevsjed to
be the same, one, "^ose car fare -f had
paid is£ flhicagq, arid had xegQgnized
ine immediately,' glthough J ha.d _afd
$_r£ recalling t£e Qr-iginal eneounter.
S|ie tsld ine exeltedly that she had
been on the lookout for me ever since,
and also that she was,in the city with
some relatives en route for home after
a trip to California. While she was
talking she was searching ber purse
for a nickej, but had no changg. I
laughed, told her. not ta bptl^er- about
it, and gavg ber 'another carj. a fe*
greeks later j'repgivef. {hi? .qcl . t with
a yery charming letter, whieh I prize
highly. I have had remarkably good
luck ever since I have worn the little
gift, and I am superstitious enough
to regard it as a sort of mascot. By a
queer coincidence the coin cbances to
bear the date of the year of my birth.''
Frenchmen. Xog'fc*
To illustrate the assumption that a
Frenchman Teasons .ery differently
front an Anglo-Saxon, the following
story of an incident in. the streets of
Paris is told by a contributor to the
New York Tribune: I was riding one
day in the Bois de Boulogne, when
there was a tremendous disturbance
just ahead of my carriage, and I saw
two thoroughly angry tourists stand-
in the street, rubbing their heads and
denouncing somebody in language
Which presently proved them to be
Americans. Two empty cabs were
standing near, the drivers of which
were burling objurgations at each other. " My driver stopped to take bis part
in the excitement. I succeeded in getting him to go on after a while, but
not until he had found out what it was
all about. I asked him what the
trouble was. "Why, you see, monsieur,"
he said, "Gaspard ran into Pierre's
cab and scraped some of the paint from
the wheel. Pierre was angry and swore
at Gaspard, whereupon Gaspard said:
'If you don't keep still, I will hit your
customer on the head with my whip!'
Pierre answered: 'If you hit my customer, I'll hit your customer!' Then
Gaspard hit Pierre's customer a sharp
rap on the head, and Pierre resented
the insult by hitting Gaspard's customer as hard a blow as he could."
And it did not strike the assembled
Frenchmen that this was anything else
than a fair retaliation.
