Protected Against Robbers,
We.Ith y Samuel De Vpe, who lives
jn Spotswood{ >f, J., has taken a new
method to guard against the loss of
his wealth. Alarmed by the recent
bank robberies at Perth Amboy, he has
taken all his cash from a local bank
and removed it to his home. Recently
he called at the bank and tore in half
all of his bonds. One-half Of each he
left in the bank and the other half he
took home. Thus, he says, he is "secured against loss of robbery.
SCHOOL NOTES
The definition for peninsula was
given to the General History class as
being a long neck stretched out to see

The U. S. History class will give reports next week on Clay, Calhoun and

It is said that'earlv in the Congressional session a new Nicaragua canal
bill will.be introduced. Appearances
are indicating that this laudable project will soon become as gigantic a
white elephant as the State Capitol at
Albany.
Admiral Dewey said to a Washington reporter that if General Leonard
Wood had been ia command at Manila
there would have been no war. But
unfortunately General Wood was in
Cuba and General Otis in Manila.
Apparently General Wheeler considers Congress abetter arena for displaying his soldierly quality than the
Fhilipines, for he is coming home to
occupy his seat in the House of Representatives. Perhaps the Alabama senatorial contest'may have had something to do with his return.
Since Mr. Havemeyer declared that
the protective tariff is the '(mother of
trusts" ther* haa baen much speculation relative to the parental ancestor
of the '■■ootopus'", and it now appears
probable that the problem will remain
unsolved until next year whea imperialism will bo out Qf the way and Mr.
Bryjiu will he at liberty to give his undivided tut-iiUon to the question.
Re_ienx_er, you cannot credit to tomorrow's account to-fiay's joys. Tbe
darkening- shadows also close the

ISirris Not Afraid of IVasps.
Mr. Murray, a Scottish naturalist, in
a paper on the habits of wasps, tells
how a blackbird will stand at the side
cf a hanging wasps' nest and deliberately tear it In pleees in order to get at
the larvae, apparently undisturbed by
the swarms of angry insects, whose
stings instantly put to flight the human
curiosity-seeker who ventures near to
watch the demolition.
A Different Matter.

I was to be married?" Mae—"Why,
everybody knows that you are engaged." Ethel—"What has that got to do
with it?"

Plenty of Time,
Years ago Joaquin Miller, journeying on foot, was overtaken by a countryman, "who took him on his "wagon
and gave him a long ride. Tired, at
length, of conversation, the poet took
a novel from his pocket and pored
over it long and silently. "What are
you reading " said the countryman.
"A novel of, Bret Harte's," said Mr.
Miller, "Well, now, I don't see how
an immortal being wants to be wasting his time with such stuff." "Are
you quite sure," said the poet, "that
I am an immortal being?' "Of course
you are." "If that he the case," re-
spoflded Miller, "I don't see why 1
should be so very economical of my
time."
The Same Thing.
Mrs. Binks (sick of it)—Really, John,
how can you bear to spend your time
