After a long and painful sickness
hi passes aw&y. .
For several days prior to Sunday last,
there had gone out many reports contradictory to themselves, regarding
the condition of William J. Jackson
and as a result many were surprised
wben his death was announced.
The sickness whicb terminated his
life, Sunday December 10, 1899, was
caused from a slight bruise upon tbe
band which was received wbile packing
apples, in this he took a little cold and
blood poisoning set in and from the first
it gave a threatening look whicb almost pictured fatal results. To say
that it was painful would be no comparison and only those who were with
him can have any idea of the tremendous suffering tbat he endured most of
the time during the three weeks of
bis sickness.
William J. Jackson was born in
Ontario county, New York April -first,
1832. He obtained a common school
education and on April 7, 1855 was
married to Augusta Spencer, they eoou
after went to Iowa with a view of making it their home but their union was
a short one, she died at Council Bluffs
J uly 7, 1858. Mr. Jackson then with a
party started for the California gold
fields but was discouraged before reaching them and turned back io Michigan
and settled in York township on the
farm now occupied by John Richards.
June 12,1861 be was married to Mary
A. Warren and at her home they remained until November 1871 since
which time they have made this village their home. During the twenty
eight years of his village life he had
been engaged in several branches of
business and had been an officer of the
village for many years, ten years of
which he was a member of tbe village
council, wbich board finds a vacancy
by his death.
Mr. Jackson since in 1863 had been'
a fa:thful and devotei member of tbe
masonic order aad had held many positions of trust with them. He was a
quiet citizen, ever ready to assist any
one, earefi.1 in bis remarks of advice
apd faithful and zealous in wbatever
was entrusted to bira. Politically, he
was a democrat because he believed it
w$s right. Religiously, he had sought
tbe future, and made a profession, saying on his death bed that he was ready
to die, and prefered to go.
Deceased was the oldest of a family
of twelve children, four boys and eight
girls, five of the latter having gone
before him. The six surviving ones,
John A., Charles M., Andrew D., Mrs.
Spencer Rogers, Mrs. James McMullen
and Mrs. Os .ar Stimpson were all per.
mitted to visit him before he passed into the coma state before death. A
brother-in-law, Geo. Nason and daughter Flora were also present before be
died.
The obsequies were held in the Baptist church Tuesday, the services being
conducted by Rev. Barry at the ohurch,
afterwards by special request of the
deceased the masonic brothers concluded the services at Qakwood cemetery.
Deceased leaves a bereaved wife, six
brothers and sisters and a broad circle
of friends to mourn the loss.
