A Millionaire's Sronblcs.
The troubles of a millionaire are illustrated by a story of William Rockefeller by one of his attorneys. The oil
magnate bought a large tract of land
in the Adirondaeks, which he uses as a
game preserve and forest home. A
small country paper announced that
Mr. Rockefeller intended tn buy half
the Adirondaeks and make them into a
park. Soon letters began to pour in.
The letters were followed by brokers,
farmers, real estate agents and speculators. Mr. Rockefeller at first denied
the report, but this had no effect. His
secretary answered every letter in the
negative, but this proved ineffective.
His clerks were instructed to "tell all
callers that their employer did not
want any Adirondack lana, but even
this was futile. Not long ago Mr.
Rockefeller was driving, and stopped
to rest his horse, when a man suddenly
"walked out from behind the trees and
asked for. a match. Mr. Rockefeller
went through his pockets and handed
the man three or four. The man
struck a match, and said: "I am very
muck obliged to -you, sir. I wanted a
match very badly, and you came just
in the nick of time. By the way,. 1
believe you are Mr. William Rockefeller, and you want to buy some land
in this neighborhood. 3,ow, I "
The sentence was not finished. The
unhappy capitalist threw the box of
matches to the man and drove off in a
gallop.—Philadelphia Saturday Evening Post. '..
Women of the _>rle_t.
A recent visitor to 'the Philippines
says that some of the women of the
island are remarkably Uretty, having
big, languishing eyes -and an abundance of long hair. T_ls they fasten
up with a big gold pin and then adorn
with flowers. They do Hot wear hats,
but use Sunshades, and do so very co-
quett ishly; they wear very dainty
shoes, but do not wear stockings. They
are distinguished by grace of figure
and movement, though according to
our ideas not especially by refinement
of habits, for both women and children smoke huge cigars and indulge
in betel chewing. It is their custom
to keep.the thumb nail of the right
hand very long, as this assists them in
playing their favorite instrument, the
guitar. The use of the fan originated
in China and sprang from the following incident: A royal princess, very
beautiful, was assisting at the feast of
lanterns, her face covered with a mask,
as usual. The excessive heat compelled her. to remove it, and in order
to guard her features from the common
gaze she moved it quickly to and fro
in front.of her face, thus simultaneously hiding her charms and cooling her
brow. The idea was at once adopted
throughout the kingdom.
He'd Been Helping Jerry.
.'In a small village in Kent livedo a
farmer wbo had two Sons. The elder,
Jerry, was an industrious and hardworking boy; the other, Willie, was
just as idle. His father, wishing to
encourage the idle one, said to him:
'•Willie, my boy, work hard all day
and I will give you a shilling when I
come home." Evening came. Willie
met his father at the gate, saying,
"Father, I have just about worked today. I have fceen*-helping Jerry all
day." His father, greatly pleased, replied: "That's a good boy; here's
your shilling. By the by, what has
Jerry been doing?" "Oh, he's been
Ashing, father," came the unexpected
reply.—Buffalo Review.
