The Plymouth Fail* Association are
in a quandary. They have" asked
nearly all the businessmen Of the
place and several outside exhibitors
for their opinion as to' holding . a fair
next fall and the replies are about
half and half for and against it.
F. J. Shearer of Plymouth, who was
asked to give a paper on 'Pine Stumps'
at a recent pioneer meeting held at
that place, expressed himself "at the
beginning that it would he a great
effort for him to attempt such a subject. We are wondering what he
would have made out of it if it had not
heen an effort, as it > Was, the write-up
occupied nearly two columns in the
Plymouth Mail.
An amusing incident happened at
Charlotte the other day when Miss'
Helen Bovee was giving a week I dr
entertainments. A young man of the
city was doing the twenty-four hours'
hypnotic, as his father, an old German,
became alarmed at the sleeper's* condition and insisted on being allowed to
awaken him, he pulled and hauled the
unconscious, boy around, poked and
pinched him, and finally lost his temper and showered a choice collection
and mixture of English and German
oaths into his ears; but all in vain, as
tbe hypnotic sleep refused to yield to
such blandishments. Finally the old
gentleman gave up in despair and
started out to find the police, but before he had gone very far he decided
it would be better to let matters take
their regular course.

Xord Chief Justice.
One day (a legal correspondent
writes) before the late lord chief justice
took sick, khe was sitting in court,
when another barrister, leaning across
the benches, during the hearing of a
* trial for bigamy, whispered: "Russell,
what's the extreme penalty for bigamy?'' "Two mothers-in-law," in-*;
stantly replied Russell. On one occasion Lord Russell went to help the"
Liberals in a certain campaign. He
began his speech of set purpose with
some very badly pronounced Scotch.
After the confusion caused by his apparent blunder had subsided, Sir
Charles Russell (as he was then) said:
"Gentlemen, I do not speak Scotch', but
I vote Scotch." Tremendous applause
followed, whereupon Sir Charles proceeded "and I sometimes drink Scotch."
With this his hold on the auflience was
secured. Although unrivaled .in- the
art->ofv cross-examination; on one occasion lie was- distincely -beaten by" a

asked,, v"It-is-my age you are asking?"

Card.
Among the guests at the Raleigh a
few days ago was a well-educated and
pleasant-mannered son of India. He
had been at the hotel several times be
fore, always ordered the best, and paid
his bills without complaint. ,On'this
occasion he .paid for Sis rooni-in advance and seemed to 'have plenty of
money. When he was ready "to* depait,-
however, he confided to. Clerk B. A
Smith that he had lost his pocketbook
and was without a cent. He didn't ask
to borrow money, but when he mentioned that he had friends in Baltimore who would help him Mr. Smith
offered to lend him a couple of* dollars. The Hindo wSs profuse in his
thanks- and promised to return the
money 'as soon as he reached the
Maryland city. Yesterday Mr. Smith
received a postal card from the man
in India, upon which was written
"I herewith send you ?2.' Thanks
very much. I appreciate your . most
noble kindness." Mr: Smith looked
on first one side and then on the other
of the card, and finally split "it in two,
but could find no tyace of- the $2.' He
is- now wondering if the Hindoo is
possessed of an abnormally developed
bump df 'humor, or whether one of
those Indian tricks* of magic is being
performed. The latter theory is the
more inviting, and he has placed the
card in a glass case and is watching
it closely to see if by some mysterious
means it will not transform itself into
a ?2 note, payable at the treasury of

Ox Races in Germany,
An ox race is held cnnually-ih many
of the provincial districts'of "Germany.
The entry fee for the **"race is very
small, but each 'ox- entered '.must be
ridden by its owner. Furthermore, the
rider is* not .allowed_to have either
whip or spurs and he must .ride- his
animal bareback and-depend-entirely
upon his voice to guide the-beast.. It
Is here that the skiU of the rider- comes
Into play, as everything dependsf on
the training of the ox and the ability
of the owner to direct its movements,
despite "the distracting noises of the
other competitors and spectators".'' As
the oxen' do not race on a track^to
direct them is no easy matter. "The
rider .who -can force his * lumbering
steed to go in a straight line is certain to win.
