SCHOOL COLUMN
The electric bells are' in order and
work very nicely.
The German iv. class are beginning
the study of "Herman and "Dorothy"
by Goethe. '
Fannie Briggs visiteS High School
Tuesday afternoon.
The Physics class is making drawings of the electric light, the telegraph circuit, the telephone receiver,
also the apparatus for distillation of
water. These figures are of special
interest to the class, being In direct
line with their study.
Mr. 'Tooze,' "When - was telegraphy
first put into use?" No answer. "Did
Noah use it before or immediately
after the- time that he spent In the
ark?" Pupil."1—"I don't remember.1' -
Miss Smith's friend, Miss Turner of
Romeo, visited school last Thursday.
German it class have begun their
new bookA'Itnmense" by Storm.
"One of the Senior girls, affer com-,
pleting her drawing of the telegraph
circuit showed it to a Sophomore boy.
Pointing to the magnet of -the instrument she said, ""It looks like a rolling
pin." He replied, "It looks like a fire
cracker." This shows the difference
in the Way a boy and a girl see the
same things.
The Freshmen are writing biographies on the life of the poet Longfellow. When their papers are returned with misspelled words marked,
it makes them wish that the Saline
High School would adopt the revised
spelling.
Wednesday morning as the pupils
met one another they asked, "Were
you at the concert?" The answer is
generally, "Yes." Then the next remark is, "It was fine." And ^the students all agree that this is true: All
enjoyed It and unanimously pronounced
it.a grand success. Each 'member of
the company is an artist, and, united,
their work is the best. Saline should
congratulate herself on being able to
obtain such talent. •
Mr. and Mrs. E*. D. Swezey, uncle
and aunt of Ralph and Helen- Swezey,
who have been visiting here" were welcome visitors at school last week.
About fifty new books for practical
use in literature, science, mathematics,
and for daily reference work havebeen
added to the library, principally by
means of the "Fair money" won last
fall. This is a" much needed addition
to the library and adds very greatly to
Its efficiency and quality as a department in the school.
A now and thoroughiy~uniform system of library management is" to be
instituted. All books will bo stamped
and numbered.- A card with name of
book, date of drawing, name of drawer
and number of book drawn will be filled put hy each pupil or patron upon
the drawing of hooks atid presented to
the librarians, who will record the
same In the record books. In this way
much more accurate and convenient
records of*all books drawn can be kept
than now, while the work of the library and librarians -will be much
facilitated. . ■
