NEW BOMBSHELLS-
One Shell Gives Light Showing: Posltlqq
fit lineiviy at Nlgftfc
A. new French -illuminating shell
bursts in the air and emits a fiery
body of globular shape, which vividly
lights up a large area for a considerable time. It is ttie latest improvement in a branch of military pyrotechnics which has recently been receiving much attention from war ex-
. perts. The idea of the illuminating
bomb is to expose at night the position of an enemy, or to reveal the character of his defenses, when an attack
is contemplated. There are already
several such projectiles, of different
varieties, on the market. "With one, a
shell is fired from an ordinary cannon
(a mountain howitzer will serve the
purpose, the bonibs "being of various
calibres), and it is so constructed as
|o explode on impact, liberating a
flaming* compound.' One compound is
•Jfeid to be somewhat similar to the cjr-
jiinary "blue light mixture" used ii}
Fourth of July' pyrotechnics, consisting of sulphur; saltpetre and a hydror
carbon. It is meant tp burn a§' brilliantly as possible, and to keep p.n
burning for-at least a minute or two.
The illumination -lasts as' long as the
saltpetre supplies oxygen tq maintaiij-
comhustion. Another species of bemb
which on bursting liberates dense,
clouds of-smoker'-with the** purpose of
concealing the. movements of troops in
the fiald," has not. yet been introduced
in actual .'warfare, although both the
French and " Germans have heen experimenting with it. In the "melinite"
shell the .French have originated a
type of projectile not only extremely
destructive when it explodes, hut
which also achieves an effect similar
to that of the ancient "stink-pot," in-
Tented by'the Saracens in the Middle
^ges. This stifled the enemy with poisonous gases", and the same purposs is
accomplished by the. projectile loaded
" with melinite, the fumes emitted being
so deadly, that a single bomh of the
kind, bursting* between decks on:. vessel, might suffocate to death half the
ship's company. In the warfare of
the future, if the hope of humanitarians is not misplaced, projectiles may
he loaded" with harmless drugs, which
on bursting will spread a sleep-producing vapor. Thus a whole regiment,
or perhaps a brigade, of soldiers may
be plunged Into involuntary slumber
hy a single well-aimed she'l— to ba
subsequently awakened by their captors and gently escorted to a place of
Jtladly captivity.

One Drawback to Deportation.
Minister Wu Ting Fang was recently
-old a story in regard to the Chinese
sxclusion act that pleased him notice-
Ably. Soon after the act was passed*
the secretary of state received a letter
from Pennsylvania, signed by a Chinaman. The writer said -that he had
2ome to this country under false pre--
;enses and hence he should he deported
io China, immediately.' The "request
tyas so strange that "the secretary of
Hate ordered an investigation". "*Tha.
itgent reported a fevf days later that
She Chinaman's'' statement about tJjja
way in vfhich he entered' this country
«as correct and that he should hs deported. There was, one ("rawhack,
ioweyer. The Chinaman had been convicted of murder and sentenced to Ufa
InnriFnnment.
Stone Used as Barometer.
The residents of northern Finland
use a peculiar stone, which is rather
common in that country, as a substitute for a barometer. This stone,
-which they call Ilmakiur, turns black
or hlacltish-gray when had "weather is
approaching; fine weather has the effect of turning it almost white. The
Finns regard the stone with superstitious reverence, but scientists say that
its changes in color are .due to salts
contained in its composition.

"Why Massachusetts Is Kiel).
The report of the state tax commis-'
sioner of Massachusetts shows why
the people of that state are rich, 'says
the New York Times. The total valuation of the capital s'tpek of corporations in that state is $641,064,123, "with
nearly $100,000,000 not counted "because of litigation. The value of the
land and machinery of these corporations is ?349,356,129. The aggregate of.
th*e*,*axes assessed on this prapeftyVfs
$5,156,160. Massachusetts is a poor
state naturally. Her people encouraged
and developed 'manufactures with- the
result stated. If the farm3 are abandoned, the mills are filled. There is a
lesson in this—dividends!

Time to Oil Up.
Like every other complex machine, the human body has its
periods for repair. Sleep is Nature's time for rest, when the
repair shops of the brain make good the damage-of the waking ^
hours. The man who cannot sleep, or who suffers from headache,
nervousness, lost appetite, indigestion, heart trouble or" pain, is
running, with a hot box. Give the tired brain and. worn-out
nerves a chance to rest. Stop! It is time to oil up.
"I- suffered from headache, nervousness and a general
rta-dowa condition. It was almost impossible for me to
sleep at night and my health became so poor that I could
perform the lightest -work only with the greatest difficulty.
J began taking Dr. Miles' "Nervine and before the first* bottle
*was gone could see an improvemefc. I "was able to get a good
sleept at night, and grew steadily stronger under the treatment until 1 was cured." C. E. Hackett, Greene, "H*. T.
