Are Your Eyes Bad?
Dr. M. F. Stein the famoas Eye Specialist
Will cure you. Many people become all but totally blind and at
an early age, simply because they pay no attention to their eyes. They notice
n dimneis and soreness after reading a while and when.a miserable headache
comes to them they ascribe it to any cause but the right one and take a pill.
The real cause of their misery is that their eyes are weak aud every time they
read orwrite means and added strain, and their eyes made weaker. Consultation with a specialist means the ending of all misery, and the saving of your
eyesight. Dr. Stein is reliable, you do not see him once and then look for him
again in vain. He is going to make special visits to your- town. Come and see
him and have your eyes scientifically tested free of charge, that you may have
comfort wheu you read and write. He will be at the
Harmon House; Monday and
Tuesday, Aug. 19 and 20.

ILLUMINATED BY GAS.
P. W. Shute Turns On The Gas and
Saline Is Illuminated.
The Balloon Went Up and Everybody Had a Good
Time and Went Home Pleased.
Once more has our thriying village
responded to a call to celebrate and
shown herself to be in no way a
failure. The Gala-day advertised for
August 14, to celebrate* the event of
our new Acetylene street lighting was
a success in every particular and the
prompters of the occasion have great
reason to feel proud ot their efforts.
Long before the hour set for the
opening, people tired of their summer
toils, began to come into town and so
continued until our streets' were a
mass of humanity bent on a good time
and they had it.
The Ypsilanti City band and our
Juvenile band furnished ample music
and kept the crowd nicely entertained.
During the afternoon sports and
games on Main street furnished their
usual amount of fun and each event
found no trouble in finding applicants
to carry out the sport.
The Lake Ridge vs Saline boys put
up a good game of ball, the score being
6 to 14 in favor of Lake Ridge.
The Balloon went up and the parachute came down. It is too often true
that balloon ascensions are a failure
and crowds often gather to witness the
sight and are only left in disappointment. The ascension was a success,
everything worked well and the aeronaut landed near the depot in perfect
safety.
The illuminating fireworks procession, something quite new in its
line presented a very pretty sight
and our streets for a time 'presented
much the appearance of a company of
troops making a raid on the enemy
and the streets were a cloud of smoice
and fire.
As the evening drew on there was
considerable anxiety manifest on the
part of our citizens in wonderment as
to the success of what was soon to follow, and while some feared the result,
others wore confident of success and
watched with wishful eyes until 8:30
when Mr. Shute ''touched the button"
and the new acetylene lights shot forth
their beautiful illumination in a most
pleasing and brilliant manner. This
part of the entertainment was, so to
speak, largely an experiment, it heing
the first and only plant of its kind in
America. Acetylene of itself is not a
new thing, but the new process, high
pressure, dry gas is an invention of
P. W. Shute and this is his trial town.
Mr. Shute has spent several thousand
dollars and nearly five years iu perfecting the process and is now to 'be congratulated for his success.

There are signs, already that shirtwaists for men are to be tolferated, it
not-encouraged, at Informal functions
in and near New York in the coming
summer. Members of yacht clubs and
other out-of-door amusement associations which give evening entertainments at their club-houses welcome
the shirtwaist as a happy solution of
a troublesome problem in dress for
these occasions, and the shirtwaist is
therefore sure of meeting at least some
measure of popularity.

Elephants are blessed with a good
appetite, and would eat all day if they
could. But although they could always eat more than they get, they do
not consume all the hay provided for
them. Some of it they use as a guard
against mos-juitoes and flies by throwing it quickly over their bodies. "Leaning over the railing in the elephant
house In Central Park, New York, the
other day, talking with Keeper Snyder,
was a tall sailor of the American navy,
Dn the ribbon of whose hair was the.
aame of the battleship Kearsarge. The
sailor was interested in elephants, and
for his benefit Keeper Snyder made
Tom, the larger of the park's two elephants kneel, and when he was down
and his back was thus within Teach,
khe keeper took a broom and swept
from the elephant's, broad hack the
thick layer of hay that was upon it.
This sweeping of the elephant's back
paused the visitor some amusement,
"or, a? he remarked, he had seen
hpuses; a"S<i sidewalks and steamboats
•"■wept*,, hut ho had never before seen
asyhody sweep an elephant. Yet
sweeping the elephants is in all shows
a regular part of the duty of the keeper. If the show gives a street parade,
the last thing done before the elephants come out into public view is to
sweep them off. It is just so at the
Zoo in Central Park. Before the menagerie is opened to the public in the
morning, the last or the preparations
in the elephants" house consists ol'
making the elephants kneel to be
swept.—Youth's Companion.
